Some people argue that holding sporting events is beneficial to a country’s development. However, other people hold the opposite opinion.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
People are divided as to whether a country benefits from hosting sporting events. While organizing sporting competitions and tournaments can prove disadvantageous in some regards, I share the view that it is beneficial to a country in many significant ways.
Some people object to a country hosting a sporting event, especially if it is an international one, for two primary reasons. First of all, there is an environmental aspect to consider. Sporting events are known to attract not only local visitors but also large crowds from other countries. An influx of tourists from other countries, in turn, contributes to overcrowding and traffic problems, which aggravate air and noise pollution. Heightened levels of pollution, as a result, disturbs the local wildlife as well as residents. Secondly, opponents are concerned that large scale sporting competitions may put pressure on local people. They fear local authorities may increase taxes to raise more funds in order to build new sports venues and renovate existing infrastructure in preparation for the events. This can lead to public disapproval and possibly, internal conflicts.
As much as I acknowledge the points above, I tend to believe holding sporting events does benefit a country in various ways. Sporting events revitalize the local economy by attracting tourists, who spend on public facilities like transportation and local businesses such as hotels and restaurants. As well as helping generate more income, such events mean new vacancies in many industries, further consolidating the local economy. On top of that, sporting events raise people’s awareness of the benefits of sports. The idea of global sporting events being held in their locality excites people, making it more likely that they take up sports. This, in effect, improves the overall public well-being. Finally, holding sporting competitions can improve a country’s international relationships, seeing as countries set aside their disputes and differences to celebrate the events like the Olympics and World Cup.
In conclusion, while organizing sporting events in a country may possibly undermine the local environment and cause public disapproval, I believe it is largely beneficial to a country’s economic, health and political development.
