There are several proposed answers to the question: Earth is unique, or close to it, in having life. Alternatively, large-scale interstellar travel may be impossible. Or perhaps intelligent life will inevitably destroy itself via nuclear weapons, or runaway artificial intelligence, or global warming, or something else. Another theory is that aliens are so alien we cannot even recognize them as living things. Or perhaps other civilizations are deliberately keeping us in the dark until we are ready to join the galactic community.

Any other explanation?

2021-08-26 13:35:38 The Fermi Paradox seeks to answer the question of where the aliens are.

Italian physicist Enrico Fermi, known for creating the first nuclear reactor, came up with the theory with a casual lunchtime remark in 1950.

This is how the Fermi paradox goes:

The Milky Way contains hundreds of billions of stars, and billions of them are similar to the sun.
It is highly likely that some of these stars will have planets that are similar to Earth.
If we assume that Earth is not particularly special, then intelligent life should also exist on some fraction of these Earth-like planets.
Some of these intelligent life-forms might develop advanced technology and even interstellar travel.
Interstellar travel would take a long time, but as there are many sun-like stars that are billions of years older, there has been plenty of time for such travel to have occurred.
Given all this, why haven’t we met or seen any trace of aliens? Where is everybody?

2021-08-23 15:55:08 Mercury is shrinking

For many years, scientists believed that Earth was the only tectonically active planet in the solar system. That changed after the MESSENGER spacecraft did the first orbital mission at Mercury, mapping the planet in high definition.

In 2016, data from the spacecraft revealed cliff-like landforms known as fault scarps. The large scarps were formed as Mercury’s interior cooled, causing the planet to contract and the crust to break and thrust upward along faults making cliffs.

Scientists believe that these scarps are geologically young, which means Mercury is still contracting 4.5 billion years after the solar system was formed.
