Earth seen from the dark side of Saturn

In this photo, Earth is 1.44 billion kilometers away! The photo was taken by a wide-angle camera on the Cassini spacecraft.

On this marvelous picture the dark side of Saturn, its bright limb, the main rings, the F ring, and the G and E rings are clearly seen; the limb of Saturn and the F ring are overexposed.

The new image of the center of the Milky Way galaxy was made using a giant mosaic of data from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa.

X-rays from Chandra are orange, green, and purple, showing different X-ray energies, and the radio data from MeerKAT are gray. The combination of X-ray and radio views allows us to see the complex movements of magnetic fields in the region.

These threads show us the weather in the region, which is driven by supernova explosions and outbursts of matter near our galaxy’s supermassive black hole.

There are 79 known moons orbiting Jupiter. Jupiter is the planet in our solar system with the most moons. Jupiter is also orbited by the largest moon in our system.

Ganymede is 5,262 km in diameter – that’s bigger than Mercury. Ganymede can be spotted with just a pair of binoculars! Have you ever spotted this moon in the night sky?

Why do stars twinkle?
Stars twinkle because of the way light is disrupted as it passes through our planet's atmosphere. Starlight is affected by the winds as it enters, as well by different areas in the atmosphere and temperatures. As light from a star races through our atmosphere, it bounces and bumps through the different layers, bending the light before you see it.
This causes the light from each star to twinkle as we look at them.
