New study suggests that rocks in the Martian crust could produce the same kind of chemical energy that supports microbial life beneath Earth’s surface, meaning that microorganisms could be present on Mars right now!

NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter continues to set records, flying faster and farther on Sunday, April 25, 2021 than in any tests it went through on Earth. The helicopter took off at 4:31 a.m. EDT, or 12:33 p.m. local Mars time, rising 5 meters. It then hurried downrange 50 meters, just over half the length of a football field, reaching a top speed of 2 m/sec!

Happy birthday, dear Hubble!
A new window to the universe opened for humanity on the morning of April 24, 1990, when Hubble Space Telescope was lofted into space.
"Hubble has changed the course of science with its discoveries and shown us the depth and beauty of the universe," said John Grunsfeld, Hubble astronaut.
Telescope's long exposures of the far universe have unveiled an "undiscovered land" of discordant objects, powerful explosions, and rapid galaxy collisions. These observations tell us the story of the evolution of our universe.
Hubble has also provided an exciting view of our own solar system, capturing colliding asteroids, changing weather on planets and moons, and even enabling the detection of previously unknown moons.
During its 31 years of service Hubble painted a picture of the solar system and beyond that has changed astronomy forever.
Thank you for your service, Hubble!

Happy Earth Day!
Today, April 22, is Earth Day, an international event celebrated to pledge support for environmental protection.
Earth Day marks the anniversary of the birth of the modern environmental movement in 1970.
Groups that had been fighting individually against oil spills, polluting factories, raw sewage, toxic dumps, the loss of wilderness and the extinction of wildlife united on Earth Day around the common values. Earth Day 1970 gave a voice to an emerging public consciousness about the state of our planet: 20 million took to the streets to protest against environmental degradation.
This day provides an opportunity to raise public awareness around the world to the challenges regarding the well-being of the planet and all the life it supports.
Earth is our only home, humanity still doesn’t have a “plan B”. We have to respect our beautiful home planet and take care of it.

Why is the ISS at an altitude of 400 km?

The International Space Station is the most important space laboratory today. It must be kept at an altitude of 400 km. And, of course, such an attitude was chosen for a reason.

As we increase the orbit higher and higher, the distance needed for rockets to get to the station increases, so the cost per launch increases as well.

Placing the station in a lower orbit isn't an option -- the atmospheric drag increases causing tremendous maintenance costs.

Even at an altitude of 400 km, the ISS is dropping at a rate of 2 km per year, so to keep it in a stable orbit, translational burns are used.

In practice, everything is not so precise. Keeping the station in orbit is the constant work of hundreds of engineers and scientists on the ground. The ISS orbit may be dropped from 400 to 320 km. Sometimes the control may decide to raise the station to 427 km if any difficulty in maintaining orbit is expected.
