The Moon is 400 smaller than the Sun, but also is 400 closer to Earth than our host star. Because of that elegant proportion both objects appear to be the same size in the sky. We can see solar eclipses because of that striking coincidence!

The origin of extra-solar object ‘Oumuamua

In 2017, the first interstellar object from beyond our solar system was discovered. It was named 'Oumuamua, meaning "messenger" in Hawaiian. The object was like a comet but had features odd enough to confuse scientists and lead to speculation that it is a piece of alien technology.

Now scientists have determined that that ‘Oumuamua is likely a piece of
a Pluto-like planet from another solar system.

Researchers found one ice — solid nitrogen — that provided an exact match to all the object's odd features. The solid nitrogen ice can be seen on the surface of Pluto, and the cometlike object could be made of the same material.

The new findings suggest that 'Oumuamua was shaped more like a pancake than a cigar. It also was smaller than previously thought — 45 by 44 by 7.5 meters.

A long-dormant volcano in the southwest of Iceland erupted last Friday. The eruption near Mount Fagradalsfjall is small but extremely picturesque!
Lava at Fagradalsfjall burst through a crack in the Earth's crust hundreds of meters long and a series of small fountains turned the night sky red near Iceland's capital Reykjavik.
Icelanders had been bracing themselves for an eruption for several weeks after a series of earthquakes has been recorded in the past month. The biggest threat was pollution from the gases that had been released, nearby residents were asked to keep their windows shut.
According to meteorologists, the eruption was small and no-one was in danger. You can even spot an Icelander casually walking a dog on the photo taken by Garðar Ólafs!

The United Arab Emirates' first-ever Mars spacecraft captured its most stunning image yet.

The spacecraft, called Hope, entered the Martian orbit on February 9, marking the end of a seven-month journey from Earth. Hope hasn’t started its science observations yet, but it has been testing its three instruments, including the 12-megapixel camera. The camera has snapped this beautiful image of the largest volcano in the Solar System, Olympus Mons. The volcano has a height of over 21 km, while the picture was taken from an altitude of 13,007 km. That's why it looks like a bellybutton!

2021-03-19 15:10:15 Venus may be hiding oceans worth of water in its crust - a finding that challenged the long-held theory that our neighbouring “twin” planet lost its water to space. Now, researchers concentrating on our other celestial neighbour – Mars – say the same thing likely happened there too.

56 years ago the first spacewalk was conducted!

On 18 March 1965, Alexei Leonov became the first person to conduct an EVA, exiting the capsule during the Voskhod 2 mission for 12 minutes and 9 seconds.

The first spacewalk nearly ended in tragedy: the Soviet cosmonaut was tied to the spacecraft with a tether, and on the way back his spacesuit had inflated due to pressure miscalculations, so he couldn’t reenter the airlock. Leonov managed to open a valve on his spacesuit and deflate it a little, so he could get safely back inside the capsule.
