A piece of wisdom from one of the Fathers of Rocketry. A teacher, an inventor, a physicist, and an aviation engineer, Konstantin Tsiolkovsky had grand ideas about space exploration.
Did you know, that at age ten he nearly became deaf from scarlet fever and had to quit school? However, Tsiolkovsky continued his education on his own at home until the family recognized his thirst for knowledge and sent him to attend college.
It is Tsiolkovsky who first determined that the escape velocity from the Earth into orbit was 8 km/second and could be achieved by using a multi-stage rocket fueled by liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen.
He designed the constructions of space rockets and came up with ideas for steerable rocket engines, multi-stage boosters, space stations, airlocks for exiting a spaceship into the vacuum of space, and closed-cycle biological systems to provide food and oxygen for space colonies.
