Here is a C2 level grammar structure to replace "despite" or "although" in some sentences. Structure works when part of the sentence following "despite" or "although" contains an adjective or adverb.

You can use AS...adj + noun...AS or AS...adverbs+AS...S+V

Despite his good manners/Although he has good manners, James is not respected by his peers.

As good as his manners are, James is not respected by his peers

Try to paraphrase the following sentence using the same structure in discussion area.

"ALTHOUGH JAMAL IS LAZY, HE HAS A TALENT TO BEAT EVERYONE IN ENGLISH"
