2021-07-23 01:12:37 Emergency Departments Operating at "Breaking Point" in New Zealand as Winter Illnesses Overwhelm Hospitals

@G3News: Several emergency departments (EDs) around New Zealand are operating over capacity as winter illnesses continue to overwhelm hospitals.

At least eight district health boards were operating over-capacity EDs last week. Christchurch Hospital was overwhelmed every single day, peaking at 151% on Sunday. Wellington's ED was full for more than two-thirds of each day, "regularly exceeding" well over 100%, while Taupo and Rotorua hospitals were "frequently" above occupancy.

"We expect there are going to be more patients here in winter, but this year there is just no capacity for this kind of outbreak and we're just at breaking point," says Auckland ED nurse Natalie Anderson.

Anderson says she's never seen hospitals so overcrowded in her 11 years as an ED nurse. Recently she's seen patients in Auckland being treated in corridors and in other spaces she says aren't suitable for medical care.

"It's probably one of the first times in my career that I'm really anxious about the idea of one of my family members having to be cared for in an emergency department."

@G3News: Madagascan authorities claim to have foiled a conspiracy to assassinate President Andry Rajoelina, with several "foreign and Malagasy" suspects arrested.

The public security minister on Wednesday said that six people had been arrested—one foreign national, two binationals, and three Madagascan citizens.

"The police had information for several months, but only now was there an opportunity to arrest them," the statement read.

@COVID19Up: The Health Ministry said Thursday that the effectiveness of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in preventing infection and mild symptoms has dropped to 40%, according to new data collected over the past month as the delta variant spreads in Israel.

In a televised address, Prime Minister Naftali Bennett meanwhile called on Israelis who haven’t been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible.

“The Israeli government is investing billions so that there is a vaccine available in every location in the country, and there are still a million Israelis who simply refuse to be vaccinated,” he said. “The vaccine refusers are endangering their health, their surroundings and all Israeli citizens. If a million Israelis continue to be unvaccinated, this will force the others to shut themselves in at home.”

The effectiveness of the vaccine in preventing hospitalizations and severe symptoms stands at 88% and 91%, respectively, the ministry said.

@COVID19Up: Scientists have backed proposals for COVID-19 booster shots in the autumn after blood tests on hundreds of people revealed that protective antibodies can wane substantially within weeks of second vaccine shots being given.

The UCL Virus Watch study found that antibodies generated by two doses of the AstraZeneca and Pfizer vaccines started to wane as early as six weeks after the second shot, in some cases falling more than 50% over 10 weeks.

“We know levels of antibodies start high and drop substantially,” said Prof Rob Aldridge, an infectious disease epidemiologist at University College London. “We’re concerned that if they carry on dropping at the rate we’ve seen, the protective effects of the vaccines will start to drop too, and the big question is, when is that going to happen?”

@G3News: Weekly jobless claims unexpected moved higher last week despite hopes that the U.S. labor market is poised for a strong recovery heading into the fall.

Initial filings for unemployment insurance totaled 419,000 for the week ended July 17, well above the 350,000 Dow Jones estimate and more than the upwardly revised 368,000 from the previous period, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

The jobless total was the highest weekly count since May 15 and came amid expectations that the jobs picture will improve markedly as enhanced unemployment benefits end and companies get more aggressive about filling vacant positions.

@G3News: A widespread disruption of some kind caused outages for major websites worldwide Thursday afternoon.

DownDetector.com showed a sharp and simultaneous spike in outage reports for travel, retail, financial and gaming websites globally.

Oracle's Cloud Infrastructure website indicated the service was experiencing an ongoing issue, though it was not immediately clear if the outages were related. Akamai also reported a problem with its service as well.

2021-07-22 18:24:54 Eric Clapton Won't Play Concerts Requiring Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination, Following His Own Vaccine Injury

@G3News: Eric Clapton said he will not perform at any venues that require attendees to prove that they’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Clapton issued his statement in response to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s announcement on Monday, July 19th, that vaccine passes would be required to enter nightclubs and venues.

Clapton’s statement was shared via the Telegram account of film producer and architect Robin Monotti, who has also been skeptical of the COVID-19 vaccine and expressed other doubts about the U.K. government’s response to the pandemic. Clapton previously shared a message about his “disastrous” health experience after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine on Monotti’s Telegram page.

“Following the PM’s announcement on Monday the 19th of July 2021 I feel honor-bound to make an announcement of my own,” Clapton said. “I wish to say that I will not perform on any stage where there is a discriminated audience present. Unless there is provision made for all people to attend, I reserve the right to cancel the show.”
