2021-07-01 02:18:25 AFRICOM Chief Pushes for U.S. Troops to Return to Somalia

@G3News: US troops capped off their return to Somalia with a pullout at the end of the Trump Administration. This doesn’t appear to have ended the US mission there, however, and AFRICOM seems to be hoping to use that as a justification for going back.

AFRICOM chief Gen. Stephen Townsend didn’t want to detail his “options,” but did say that the training advise and assist missions are a lot harder when US troops aren’t in Somalia.

That’s not surprising. US operations in Somalia, to the extent they were seen, seemed mostly limited to assassinating suspected militants in rural Somalia and fueling complaints of civilian deaths, which they constantly dismissed.

"When you have such a low level of vaccination superimposed upon a variant that has a high degree of efficiency of spread, what you are going to see among undervaccinated regions—be that states, cities or counties—you're going to see these individual types of blips," he said. "It's almost like it's going to be two Americas."

@G3News: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned Bill Cosby’s sex assault conviction, setting the stage for the release of the 83-year-old comedian later in the day.

The state’s highest court tossed Cosby’s conviction as a result of an agreement he had with a prior prosecutor that would have prevented Cosby from being criminally charged in the case. This new ruling bars any retrial in the case, court documents say.

Cosby is two years into a three-to-10-year prison term.

According to a new poll, the economy has replaced healthcare and disease as a top concern, with nearly a quarter of adults who were polled calling it the most important problem. A majority of Americans are worried about rising living costs.

Just 35% of the country thinks the U.S. economy is headed in the right direction, and 44% say they are “very concerned” that prices will keep rising, according to the Reuters/Ipsos poll.

2021-06-30 04:54:57 Canada Wants to Fine People Up to $50,000 for “Online Hate Speech”

@G3News: The Canadian government plans to pass a law that criminalizes so-called online “hate speech."

The law criminalizes online hate speech, with first time offenders getting a fine of C$20,000 (about US$16,200) and second time offenders getting a fine of C$50,000 (about US$40,500).

According to Canada’s Attorney General David Lametti, the proposed law targets extreme forms of hatred, which “expresses detestation or vilification of a person or group on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination,” not “simple expressions of dislike or disdain.”

“Hate speech directly contradicts the values underlying freedom of expression and our Charter of Rights,” Lametti added. “It threatens the safety and well-being of its targets. It silences and intimidates, especially when the target is a vulnerable person or community. When hate speech spreads, its victims lose their freedom to participate in civil society online.”
