2021-07-07 21:04:55 The CDC Stopped Reporting Most COVID-19 Cases in Vaccinated People. That Makes It Hard to Know How Dangerous Delta Is.

@COVID19Up: The CDC has stopped reporting "breakthrough cases" of COVID-19 that resulted in asymptomatic, mild, or moderate infections. Since May 1, the agency has only reported and investigated SARS-CoV-2 infections among vaccinated people that resulted in hospitalization or death. Sequencing efforts in the US haven't ramped up much, either: The country is still only sequencing about 1.4% of its COVID-19 cases.

That means it's difficult to tell exactly how much of a risk the Delta variant poses to vaccinated people. Researchers still don't know whether Delta makes breakthrough cases more common, or what the typical symptoms of a breakthrough infection caused by Delta look like.

In a recent post for Harvard Health Publishing, Robert Shmerling, an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, called the CDC's decision not to track all breakthrough cases "surprising" and "disappointing."

"By tracking only cases requiring hospitalization or causing death, we may miss the chance to learn how people with 'milder' disease are affected by Delta or other variant infections, such as how long their symptoms last and how the infection may disrupt their lives," Shmerling said.

He added that the US could also miss important information about which vaccines are most effective against Delta, how long vaccine protection against the variant lasts, and whether the timing of a second vaccine dose might determine one's likelihood of a breakthrough case.

The book, which contains 349 names, offers a window into the late sex offender's social circle a full decade before the era covered by his previously known "little black book." More than 200 names listed in the book did not appear in Epstein's later address book.

A few of the more prominent new entries include several of Donald Trump and Melania Trump's associates, actors and actresses, and even the wife of CNN anchor Chris Cuomo.

Other prominent entries not previously associated with Epstein include Morgan Fairchild, Suzanne Ircha, Carl Icahn, John A. Catsimatidis, Sandy Warner, and Martin Peretz.

@G3News: The U.S. government was granted "limited permission" to appeal a London court decision that ruled Julian Assange shouldn’t be extradited on mental health grounds.

It’s allowed to challenge whether the Judge applied the law correctly, if she gave the U.S. sufficient advance notice of her decision and whether assurances given by the government mitigate Assange’s risk of suicide.

London’s High Court ruled in January that the imprisoned journalist should not be extradited, citing concerns about his mental health and well-being.

The US case against the journalist suffered a major setback last month, after a key witness admitted to an Icelandic news outlet that he'd fabricated accusations against the Australian.

@G3News: Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been assassinated in an attack on his home, according to a statement from the country’s interim prime minister, who called the killing a “hateful, inhumane and barbaric act."

A group of unidentified individuals attacked Moïse’s private residence overnight on Wednesday and shot him dead, interim Premier Claude Joseph said.

First Lady Martine Moïse was shot in the attack and was hospitalized.

The government had declared a state of emergency amid confusion over who would take over the reins of the country.

@G3News: The Pentagon said Tuesday it canceled a disputed cloud-computing contract with Microsoft that could eventually have been worth $10 billion. It will instead pursue a deal with both Microsoft and Amazon and possibly other cloud service providers.

“With the shifting technology environment, it has become clear that the JEDI Cloud contract, which has long been delayed, no longer meets the requirements to fill the DoD’s capability gaps,” the Pentagon said in a statement.

The statement did not directly mention that the Pentagon faced extended legal challenges by Amazon to the original $1 million contract awarded to Microsoft.
