The purpose of language is to communicate. Translating from one language to another is not merely substituting one word for another because different cultures express ideas differently. Additionally, different cultures place varying degrees of emphasis on things, or even value things that aren't important to the other, which must be communicated effectively.

When one learns another language, one learns more than just grammar and vocabulary. One must also learn context and syntax, which are only discerned through understanding the culture in which the new language exists.

The more fluent one becomes in the language, the greater the understanding one has of its culture. Furthermore, the language learner develops a better understanding of the lives and the thought processes of the native speaking people of the language learned.
