The area under grain and legume crops on May 1, 2022 was 15.7% higher than a year earlier .

A total of 2.4 million hectares of land were sown in Russia as of May 1, 2022, compared to 2.85 million a year earlier. Most likely, such a reduction in the area of crops is a consequence primarily of weather factors, rather than economic factors, the spring this year was colder than last year, but nevertheless the figures (against the background of the beginning of the world food crisis) are unpleasant

The situation is good in the southern regions: the Krasnodar region sowed by 33% more than a year before, the Rostov region - by 54.5%, the Volgograd region - by 39%. Of the large agricultural regions, a slight decrease was recorded only in Stavropol Territory: -5.4% compared with last year

The situation in the Volga region is much worse. In Mordovia, 44% less land was sown than a year earlier, in Tatarstan - by a record 73.4%! In the Chernozem region, too, the decline from -8.3% in Kursk region to -36% in Lipetsk

Companies with the largest bitcoin holdings

Investing in cryptocurrency has been popular lately - and not just among mere mortals, but also among some companies!

American analyst company MicroStrategy has the largest reserves of the first cryptocurrency among all public companies: more than 129 thousand bitcoins. At current exchange rates, that's somewhere around $3.9 billion! Second place goes to Tesla, which has 43 thousand bitcoins on its balance sheet (more than a billion dollars).

Next comes cryptocurrency companies (Marathon is on the third place - a miner, for example), but their reserves are much more modest

In Q1 2022, Russia's birth rate decreased by more than 5% compared to 2021.

During the 1st quarter of this year, an average of 8.9 children were born for every 1,000 residents in Russia. In the first quarter of covid 2021, the figure was markedly higher: 9.4 children per 1,000 people - and this despite the fact that those born by Q1 2021 were for the most part conceived already during the period of covid restrictions

The strongest decline in the birth rate was recorded in Tuva (-2.4 children per 1000 inhabitants), Yakutia (-2.2) and Chukotka (-2). The birth rate decreased more than by 1 per thousand inhabitants in Ingushetia, Buryatia, Dagestan, Khakassia, Komi, Pskov and Kirov oblasts

Only Chechnya showed a notable plus in birth rate - 2.1 more children were born there per thousand residents in Q1 2022 than a year earlier. The birth rate increased by 1.1 in Altai, by 0.6 - in the Magadan region. Seven more regions recorded a symbolic increase of 0.1-0.2 children per thousand inhabitants and fertility d

Which European countries have the least number of people who know foreign languages

At the first moment the answer may cause confusion, but this quickly passes - because the leading share of not speaking foreign languages is in Great Britain! Almost two thirds (65.4%) of its inhabitants don't know any language other than their native language - but they don't have to, the speakers of the main international language

Second place goes to Romania, where 64.2% of the residents do not know any foreign languages, and Bosnia and Herzegovina (61%) rounds out the top three. Well, for the poor countries of Eastern and Southern Europe this is to be expected

The best situation with foreign languages is in the Baltics and Scandinavia - and in small countries in general. Sweden sets a record here: only 3.4% of its inhabitants speak no foreign languages

Do you fear the possibility of Russia using nuclear weapons?

According to survey, half of Russians are afraid of Russia's use of nuclear weapons. 21% are not afraid at all, and another 8% are not very afraid. At the same time, only 34% of respondents believe that in the event of a conflict with the West, Putin will order the first to use nuclear weapons (in 2015 there were 32%, so everything is stable here).

Returning to the fear of nuclear weapons, the picture by age looks interesting: young people are most often about neutral about their fear of the use of nuclear weapons (3 points out of 5 are something along the lines of "I kind of am, but I kind of am not").

People of the older generation have usually already made up their minds about their attitudes toward nuclear weapons - and are polarized! Both the proportion (immortal...) not at all afraid of the prospect of Russia using nuclear weapons, and the proportion experiencing very strong fear about this, there is the maximum

Percentage of children living with only one parent, by country

Russia is one of the world leaders in this not-so-happy ranking: 18% of all children (under 18) in our country live with only one parent. This proportion is higher in the United States (23%), Great Britain (21%), and Sao Tome and Principe (19%).

Alas, we don't do well with the traditional family. If we consider this a sign of notorious "spirituality," then it suddenly turns out that we are no better than Western countries, about the spirituality of which we are so fond of talking. And obviously, we are not only worse than the countries of the East, but even many Eastern European countries (like Poland) and the Balkans! In the Balkans, the percentage of children growing up with only one parent does not exceed 7%.

How Russians feel about NATO

Negatively, of course: only 7% of surveyed in May 2022 Russians said they have a positive attitude toward the North Atlantic Alliance. For comparison, back in March 2022, when the events in Ukraine had just begun, 10% of respondents had a positive attitude toward NATO, and four years ago - 11%

The young people are least negative about NATO: in the cohort 18-24 73% say they have a negative attitude to NATO, while 16% say they have a positive attitude. In the older 55+ group the same figures are 88% and 4%, respectively
