Changing Democracy Index in the World from 2006 to 2021

The Economist Intelligence Unit's calculated democracy index has been declining quite rapidly around the world in recent years, but the decline has been particularly pronounced during the covid period: the global average democracy index in 2021 is 5.28 points, versus 5.44 in 2019. Compared to 2006, the decline is even more pronounced

Among all countries, Russia turned out to be one of the leaders in terms of the rate of decline of the index over the past 15 years: from 5.02 (the hybrid regime) to the current 3.24 (the authoritarian regime), a decline of about 1.5 times. Together with us our geopolitical "allies" Iran, Venezuela, Syria and some other countries, mainly in Southeast Asia and Africa, are among the leaders in the decline of democratization

By the way, most of Western countries also showed a fall of democracy index, though not so noticeable, and most of Asian countries - quite noticeable. One of the few regions of the world where democra

Economic expectations of Russians

According to survey, almost half of Russians believe that the hardest times are yet to come for all of us. This is slightly less than the rate of 55% in March of this year, and even at the level of the last 2-3 years, but, frankly speaking, this result doesn't look very encouraging.

Another 30% of respondents said that we are experiencing the hardest times right now (which is, by the way, noticeably higher than in the past four years), while 18% of optimists said that they were already behind us. And this is, significantly lower than the latest figures and close to the levels of the crisis of 2008-2009 and the crisis of 2014

Evolution of the world's largest economies

According to forecasts CEBR, by 2031, China will become the largest economy in the world with a GDP of more than $ 37 trillion, displacing the permanent leader U.S. (U.S. GDP in 2031 is expected to be $ 35.4 trillion). At the bottom of the three leaders will be India, which not long ago (in 2006), took only the 14th place.

On the whole, the old leaders are leaving: Italy has fallen from the 7th to the 13th place, Spain has risen from the 9th to the 15th; new leaders are coming. In addition to India and China, there is, for example, Indonesia, which is not even in the top 15, and by 2031 will be in 8th place.

Our position is more or less stable: 10th place by 2031.

32% of U.S. residents worried about inflation

And that's a record for more than 15 years of observation - and nearly double the previous record of the 2008-2009 crisis. Other financial problems garnered far fewer votes: low wages 11%, gasoline prices 10%, housing costs 8%, and health care prices 7%

And one more interesting point: only 28% of respondents from the group with incomes above the average believe in improving their financial situation in the near future against 50% a year earlier, while confidence in the future among people with average and low incomes has decreased, but not so significantly

Who Americans blame for rising gasoline prices in the United States

According to a YouGov poll, Americans blame their president the most for the rise in gasoline prices (caused in large part by rising global oil prices - which, in turn, were caused by the "special operation" and the sanctions that followed it)! 37% said that Biden is to blame for rising gasoline prices. And among political opponents (supporters of the Republican Party) they were 66%!

Oil companies are in second place in the rating of guilty people (30%), and "bronze" was given to Putin (13% of Americans blame him).

Biden and the oil companies are more often blamed by the elderly, while young people cannot find anyone to blame; Democrats do not like the oil companies or Putin, and Republicans only like Biden.

Number of universities in the top 500 of the QS World Rankings by country

The U.S., as expected, has the most top universities: 83 at once! The United Kingdom is in second place (46 universities in the world's top 500), and Germany closes the top three (29).

Rapidly developing China has almost caught up with Germany - there are 28 universities in the world top 500, and Australia (24 universities) occupies the fifth place in the world.

We have 17 of the world's top 500 universities, giving us sixth place in the world, which we share with Canada and South Korea.

Of interest: in sanctions-ridden Iran, two universities are in the top 500 at once - as in Poland, for example, and more than in Turkey or Greece (there is one each). And in poor Pakistan, three universities made it into the top 500 at once. At the same time, there are only five universities in Africa at the top of the world ranking, four of which are located in South Africa.

Migration of millionaires in 2022

The biggest number of dollar millionaires left Russia this year: 15,000 people at once - and it's not even halfway through the year! By the way, Ukraine took the fifth place on the outflow of millionaires: -2800 people, but taking into account their much smaller number there than in our country (or in other leading countries) it is a very, very high number. The rich are fleeing from the "special operation" on both sides of the front line...

Another 10,000 millionaires left China, 8,000 left India, 3,000 left Hong Kong. Of the Western countries, only Great Britain (-1500) is in deficit.

More millionaires came to the UAE (+4 thousand), suddenly Australia (+3.5 thousand), Singapore (+2.8), Israel (+2.5) and Switzerland (+2.2)

Index of physical volume of GDP by industry in Q1 2022

According to the official data released the other day, the Russian economy in 1Q2022 has not yet really noticed the beginning of the "special operation" (although the most miracles with the exchange rate and the stock market occurred in March - just the end of 1Q). GDP in 1Q2022 grew by 3.5% (and that's a volume index, cleared of price changes) vs. 1Q2021! Interestingly, by the way, the deflator index (price index) grew by 23.4% compared to 1Q2021

From the industries, the best performing were mining (+8.6% vs. last year - and given the growth in commodity prices, this is not hard to believe), culture, sports, leisure and entertainment (also +8.6%, and this is somewhat surprising amid the problems at movie theaters, the cancelation of international competitions, etc. - maybe we'll see a drop in the second quarter) and other services (+8.5% over last year)

And the only (!) sector that declined noticeably was household activities: -6%
