World companies with the largest losses

China's video streaming company Kuaishou was the biggest loser from Forbes Global 2000 list: with revenues of $12.58 billion last year, it posted a loss of about $12 billion - 96% of revenues

The Italian telecom company TIM ended the year 2021 with a loss of 56% of the 18-billion-dollar revenue, and closes the three (anti-) leaders of the Chinese competitor Uber DiDi, a loss of 28% of revenues (which amounted to nearly 27 billion dollars). Eighth place on the list, by the way, is occupied by Meituan, another Chinese technology startup engaged in delivery.

The biggest personal data leaks of the last decades

A total of 17.2 billion records were stolen by hackers between 2004 and 2021. The largest data breach last year, for example, was at LinkedIn, where hackers accessed 700 million records. The largest data breach in history occurred in 2013, when Yahoo had about 3 billion records stolen

Every year more and more people live near armed conflicts

In 1990, about 500 million people around the world lived within 50 kilometers of an active armed conflict - by 2020 there were almost 1.2 billion (and probably even more now)

Most of these people (just over 800 million) live near low intensity conflicts (1 to 25 people killed per year), but 100 million people living near very high intensity conflicts (over 1000 people killed per year) is also very, very big

Attention to the "special operation" continues to decline

According to survey, just over half of Russians in May 2022 followed the situation around Ukraine: 22% very closely + 34% fairly closely. By comparison, in March 2022, when the "special operation" was just beginning, 29% followed it very closely and 35% followed it fairly closely. In total, 64% compared to the current 56%.

The older age group follows the situation in Ukraine the most: a total of 71% in the 55+ cohort, plus a very modest 34% in the younger cohort (18-24)

Number of active clients on the Moscow Exchange in April 2022

According to data Moscow Exchange, in April 2022 the number of active clients (those who made at least 1 transaction during the previous month) was almost 2.4 million people. It is by 371 thousand more than in the previous month.

The number of active investors has increased by 18% for 1 month after a decline by 37% a month earlier. Prior to March 2022, the last decline in activity among private investors was seen only in May 2021, but then their number decreased by only 2%.

As of March 2022, the number of active investors on the exchange was back to July 2021 levels.

Evolution of the cryptocurrency economy

Despite the recent decline in overall capitalization, the crypto-economy continues to evolve at a very high rate. The market capitalization decreased in 2022 compared to 2021 by about a half: from $2.4 trillion to the current $1.3 trillion, but the number of cryptocurrencies more than doubled: from a little over 8 thousand to the current 19670 different coins

Figures of 7-8 years ago look vanishingly small compared to current ones, and bitcoin share in total capitalization of the whole crypto market decreased from 79% to 43%

Countries with the highest projected GDP growth rate in 2022

According to WEO forecasts, global GDP as a whole will grow 3.6% in 2022.

Meanwhile, Guyana's GDP will grow at an astounding 47.2%! Iraq (+9.5%) will be in second place in terms of growth rate, followed by Kuwait (+8.2%), India (+8.2%), and Saudi Arabia (+7.6%).

We, as we recall, are expected to decline by 8.5%. In 2023, by the way, they also expect a decline, but by a more modest 2.3%.

The Googliest Countries in the World

The United States is the most googled country in the world (read the graph this way: the country from which the arrow points most often searches for the country to which the arrow points) - it is the most searched country in Europe, Latin America, Africa and even India and China. And in Russia, by the way, it is the U.S. that is most often googled, too

At the same time, we have one of the largest armies of "fans" outside the U.S.: the majority of CIS countries and the Baltic states most often google Russia. The group of "fans" is larger than ours only in France (outside the U.S.): probably due to a large number of former African colonies

Is Russia part of Europe?

Surprisingly (against the background of everything that is happening), but the majority of Russians in March 2022 said that Russia was and still is part of Europe! 33% of respondents completely agree with this statement, and 31% rather agree with it.

Interestingly, in 2016, the number of those who "fully agree" with Russia's European essence was even lower - 29% (although, at the expense of a larger share of "rather agree," the total amount was slightly higher).

The number of NATO armed forces has declined significantly over the past 30 years

Germany and Italy now have three times less troops than they had in 1990 (well, there were three times less in 2021 - the situation may be starting to change now, although it is unlikely fast). The total number of troops in Germany and Italy is now 189,000 and 174,000, versus 545,000 and 493,000 respectively thirty years earlier - a decrease of 65% in both countries

There were also fewer troops in France (by 62%), Spain (by 53%), Great Britain (-49%), Turkey (-42%), and even the United States, although there were an impressive 1.35 million soldiers (down 38% from 2.18 million in 1990)

The world is gradually demilitarizing, which is a good thing (although it is more accurate to say that it is demilitarized...).
