Did you know? Hamsters get startled very easily! Baby hamsters are born blind and adults can only see a few inches in front of them. This is why we need to approach them slowly so as not to startle them.

[Domestic Trade Ban in Ivory]
Did you know that from tomorrow (1 September), the sale of elephant ivory and ivory products will be completely banned in Singapore?

As a signatory to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), Singapore takes a zero-tolerance stance on illegal wildlife trade. This ban on the domestic trade in elephant ivory, announced in 2019, highlights Singapore’s resolve in the fight against the illegal ivory trade.

With this ban, those found to have offered elephant ivory or ivory products for sale, or put on public display for the purpose of sale, may be charged under the Endangered Species (Import & Export) Act. This carries a penalty of a fine of up to $10,000 per specimen, not exceeding $100,000 in total and/or up to 12 months’ imprisonment upon conviction.

The flowers of the Blue Butterfly Bush (Rotheca myricoides) resemble butterflies, hence its name!

Don’t let its pretty looks deceive you as this woody, evergreen shrub is resistant to most pests. In addition, its leaves emit a pungent smell when crushed!

[Pesta Ubin 2021]

Pulau Ubin has one of Singapore’s richest ecosystems, with six major habitats – from sandy and rocky beaches to seagrass lagoon and coral rubble – that are home to a wide array of biodiversity, from rare plants to local and migratory birds. Some of these species cannot be even found on mainland Singapore, such as the Ashy Roundleaf Bat and Lesser False Vampire!

From virtual tours around Pulau Ubin to online talks on the island’s rich biodiversity and history, there’s something for everyone at Pesta Ubin!

[Centre for Wildlife Forensics and NParks K9 unit]

We’ve levelled up our capabilities to fight the illegal trade in wildlife!

We officially opened the Centre for Wildlife Forensics on 28 August! Announced in 2020, the Centre will utilise science and technology to analyse items such as seized elephant ivory and pangolin scales to locate their geographical origins.

We also launched our new K9 Unit to sniff out wildlife or wildlife products at our border checkpoints. Minister for National Development Desmond Lee commissioned the new NParks K9 unit - check out more photos here.
