During World War ll, the Japanese selected a site in Bukit Batok Nature Park as a memorial for the soldiers who died. All that remains from that time are two pillars and 120 concrete steps leading to a transmission tower.

Read about the significance and meaning of the location on the memorial plaque that lies at the foot of the stairs, located at Lorong Sesuai within the nature park.

If you are heading to our parks, remember to wear a mask, observe safe distancing and keep to group sizes of up to 8 pax only, with no intermixing between groups.

Ever wondered where the natural blue colouring of delicious nyonya kueh, such as the Pulut Tai Tai and Kueh Salat, come from?

The edible blue dye is extracted from the flowers of the Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea)! Its funnel-shaped flowers come in colours ranging from white, pink, light blue or dark blue.

Its flowers are not the only parts that are useful! Traditionally, juice from the roots is mixed with cold milk as a remedy to remove phlegm and chronic bronchitis. Its seeds can also be mashed with honey to relieve tonsillitis.

Indeed a versatile and handy plant!

Contrary to popular belief, the tail of the horseshoe crab is not used for defence. It actually helps with locomotion and to upright (or steady) itself if it gets turned upside down!

The horseshoe crab is mainly a scavenger, feeding on worms, bivalves and animal matter. Two species of this crab have been recorded in Singapore – the Mangrove Horseshoe Crab (Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda) and the Coastal Horseshoe Crab (Tachypleus gigas).

Here’s to an “Ox-spicious” New Year ahead!

While you won’t find any wild oxen around, there are some flora and fauna with cattle-inspired names in our green spaces!

For example, the Oxblood Ginger (Costus erythrophyllus) is a shrub that produces blueish green foliage with bright blood red undersides, thus its common name.

The Cinnamon Bush Frog (Nyctixalus pictus) is a rainforest frog that can be found in the Bukit Timah and Central Catchment Nature Reserves.

Unlike most frogs, this species lays its eggs in tree cavities which are considered a rare microhabitat in Singapore’s rainforests.

Another fun fact – a soft "poop" call can be heard by males in the evening!
