2022-05-07 11:37:25 On this day in 1876 David Bryce died. Bryce was the most prolific and famous Scottish architect of the Victorian period.

He was educated at the Royal High School and joined the office of the architect William Burn in 1825. By 1841, Bryce had risen to be Burn's partner. Burn and Bryce formally dissolved their partnership in 1845.

Burn moved to London, and Bryce succeeded to a very large and increasing practice. In the course of a busy and successful career, which was actively continued almost down to his death, he attained the foremost place in his profession in Scotland, and designed important works in most of the principal towns of the country.

In 1835 he was elected an associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, and in the following year became an academician. He was also a fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects, of the Architectural Institute of Scotland, of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. Open / Comment

2022-05-04 10:52:13 Sturgeon is either showing cowardice or blatantly showing discrimination against women here. When asked to define what a woman is she refused. This should of course be an easy question to answer. The dictionary defines a woman as "an adult female".

But of course Sturgeon, who is trying to push through legislation to allow anyone to change sex by simply signing a declaration, worries more about the effect it may have on the tiny percentage of trans people than on the rights and safety of women.

Sturgeon holds women in so little regard that she won't even agree to meet campaigners for women's rights to discuss their concerns over her proposed legislation. Open / Comment

2022-05-04 10:35:06 Starmer is of course right (for once). Both the SNP MPs have had the complaints against them upheld by Westminster's independent complaints and grievance scheme and been referred to an independent panel.

Yet the SNP refuse to take any action against either Patricia Gibson, who remains the SNP housing spokesperson, or Patrick Grady, who is due to take part in the Queens Speech debate.

Sturgeon and the SNP are constantly attacking other parties over sleaze and going on about the need to protect the vulnerable. But this does not seem to apply to their own members. At the very least they should suspend Grady and Gibson until the panel comes back with its verdict. Open / Comment

2022-05-04 09:55:25 On this day in 1807 the Scottish painter Thomas Duncan was born in Kinclaven Perthshire.

Educated at the Perth Academy, he began studying law, but abandoned it for art. Beginning under the instruction of Sir William Allan, he attained early distinction as a delineator of the human figure; and his first pictures established his fame so completely, that at a very early age he was appointed professor of coloring and afterwards of drawing, in the Trustees Academy of Edinburgh

He died of a brain tumour in Edinburgh on 25 April 1845. Open / Comment

2022-05-03 13:11:36 The National Trust for Scotland is to offer refugees free six-month membership of the organisation. The membership will be renewable, meaning in reality refugees will be entitled to free access to NTS properties indefinitely.

The NT in England offers a similar scheme but under it the refugee must reside with an NT member. So far it does not look like that will be the case in Scotland.

Given that NTS individual membership costs £63 a year, this is a cost that is unaffordable for many indigenous Scots, effectively banning a whole section of our indigenous society from access NTS property and learning about their heritage.

Yet again we see public organisations discriminating against the indigenous population in favour of incomers. Open / Comment

2022-05-03 10:35:12 On this day in 1679 Archbishop James Sharp, Primate of Scotland, is attacked and killed by Covenanters while travelling through Fife to St Andrews. The attackers are probably waiting for the Sheriff of Fife, but are happy to murder instead the man leading the forces suppressing the Covenant in Scotland. His murder sparks a wider uprising leading to what is known as the "Killing Time Open / Comment
