-LEON PERERA-More than 30 years ago, the late Harry Elias founded the Criminal Legal Aid Scheme to provide disadvantaged persons with access to legal representation on criminal matters. The scheme began from the principle that accused persons should not stand in front of judges without legal representation just because they cannot afford lawyers. The Workers’ Party has long argued that justice should be for all, and last year, MPs Sylvia Lim and He Ting Ru filed a motion in Parliament on this topic. Recently in Parliament, I asked for an update on the CLAS to keep track of its effectiveness.

-CHUA KHENG WEE-During the MOM COS debates, I called for a baseline level of flexible work arrangements, childcare leave on a per child (up to 12 years old) basis and parental care leave to be legislated.
MOM has shared that in 2019, about 85% of employers offered some form of formal or ad-hoc FWAs in the workplace. I’m sure many will agree that the level of flexibility that was in place pre-COVID is dramatically different from what we have seen today!
Yet while flexible work arrangements are important, it is also equally important to give our workers the flexibility to take time off without taking no pay leave to care for their children or parents.
It can be argued that increasing leave provisions could be difficult against the challenging economic climate…but the challenges of our low fertility rate and ageing population are no less critical. If we wish to uphold the ideal of family support, then we ought to send the right signal to society on this matter.

-GERALD GIAM-Every year, about 9,000 students graduate from local private education institutions and thousands more study in universities overseas. Most of these students have to pay full tuition fees for their studies.
