BUDGET DEBATE 2021Must the Government introduce the GST hike before 2025? Louis Chua Kheng Wee argues that the need to raise government revenue should be considered in the context of cash surpluses in previous years up until 2019. He also touched on the retirement adequacy of Singaporeans and the urgent need to restructure our country's economy.

-HE TING RU-I have been following the progressive release of information as the story unfolds. If anything, it reinforces the need for greater protection for our forests. Environmental consultant Tony O'Dempsey, recently commented that the "loss of this area will be potentially detrimental to the rail corridor's ecological sustainability".
Last Wednesday, I filed a series of PQs on the matter, which primarily target issues of transparency and public accountability for our agencies to ensure that such egregious errors do not happen again.
When it comes to development decisions, we need to ensure that nature stands a fair chance. Forests are important to our small nation, and hence our development processes have to be transparent and fair. Our resources are scarce, and lack of protection only makes them scarcer. My PQs call for tougher action to safeguard these spaces. It is with great regret that we grieve the loss of a vital ecosystem that could not be properly studied.
It's difficult to ignore these gaps that leave our forests vulnerable to destruction and damage while we talk about Singapore Green Plan and our other sustainability efforts.
Thanks to the efforts of active citizens and civil society for bringing attention to the issue.
