{Nay! But on their hearts is the Raan (covering) which they used to earn} [Surah al-Mutaffifeen (83): 14]

Hadeeth
From Abu Umaamah bin Tha’labah رضي الله عنه who said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم say: “Whoever seizes the wealth of Muslim man with a false oath, then a black spot is placed in his heart, nothing will change it until the Day of Judgment.”

[Mustadrak al-Haakim (4/294) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in al-Saheehah (3364)]

Hadeeth
`Abdullaah ibn Unays al-Juhanee رضي الله عنه reported that Allaah’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “From the gravest of the major sins are to ascribe partner to Allaah; to displease parents; and take a false oath; and, if anyone swears an oath on Allaah, a firm oath introducing therein so much lie as a gnat’s wing then a spot is put in his heart till the Day of Resurrection.”

[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3020) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

Hadeeth
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Verily, when the servant commits a sin, a black spot appears in his heart. If he repents from it, his heart is polished clean. However, if he increases (in the sin), the spot will continue to increase. That is the statement of Allaah: {Nay! But on their hearts is the Ran (covering) which they used to earn}” [Surah al-Mutaffifeen (83): 14]

[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (3334), Sunan Ibn Maajah (3441) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee. Also graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh Muqbil in Saheeh al-Musnad (1355, 1449)]

Hadeeth
Narrated Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whenever the servant commits a wrong, a black spot is put in his heart. So, if he refrains from it, seeks forgiveness and repents, his heart is polished clean. But if he returns to the sin, the spot will increase until it overcomes his (entire) heart, and this is the Raan that Allaah mentions when He says: {Nay, but on their hearts is the Ran (covering) which they used to earn}."

[al-Nasa’ee in al-Kubraa (10179, 11594) and graded as “Hasan” by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Mawaarid (1483, 2075)]

2022-02-23 17:28:56 Why has the time of al-Asr been specified in this narration

Shaikh Ibn Baaz رحمه الله said:
❝There is a stern warning in this narration against taking false oaths…
And after al-Asr is more worse because the person is concluding his day upon lies and oppression.❞
[Ibn Baaz (Hulal al-Ibrizaiyyah (2/301)]

Al-Khattaabee said: ❝The time of al-Asr has specifically been mentioned here because of sinning at that time is greater – even though taking false oaths is prohibited at all times – because Allaah تعالى has made this time more honored. And it has been narrated (in Musnad Ahmad with an authentic chain) that the Angels of the day and the Angels of the night meet at the time of al-Fajr and al-Asr. And the time of al-Asr is the time when a person’s deeds for the day come to an end, and the reward of the deeds done are decided by the last actions. This is why a heavy punishment has been prescribed so that a person does not transgress.❞
[Sharh al-Qastalaanee (4/205)]

Abdullaah Ibn Salaam said: ❝It is referring to the time from al-Asr until al-Maghrib, because this is the time when the Angels of the night meet with the Angels of the day, and it is the time when the Deeds are presented to Allaah. It is the time in which Allaah تعالى forgives His slaves who offer the prayers, and this is why the Prophet ﷺ has mentioned a harsh punishment for those who seek to sell their commodities after al-Asr through (false) oaths.❞

2022-02-22 22:28:57 4 years and 1400 years!

They were admonished when only 4 years had passed and we feel safe even after 1400 years have passed. Indeed this is the sign of our foolishness.

Allaah تعالى said:

❝{Has not the time yet come for the believers that their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allaah and that which has been revealed of the truth, lest they become as those who received the Scripture before, and the term was prolonged for them and so their hearts were hardened And many of them were rebellious.}❞
[Surah al-Hadeed (57): 16]

Narrated `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood: ❝Since our acceptance of Islaam and the revelation of this Aayah in which Allaah has shown annoyance to us: {Has not the time yet come for the believers that their hearts should be humble for the remembrance of Allaah?} there was a gap of four years.❞
[Saheeh Muslim]

Know, Allaah have Mercy on you, this is `Abdullaah ibn Mas`ood رضي الله عنه - he was among the first 6 people to embrace Islaam, and one of the most knowledgable Sahaabee on the Tafseer of Qur’aan - who said that only four years had passed after his embracing Islaam when Allaah تعالى revealed this Aayah of Surah al-Hadeed. The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم was still with them and they were admonished by Allaah.

But look at our affairs. It is now more than fourteen hundred (1400) years since this Aayah was revealed. It is now more than fourteen hundred (1400) years since the Prophet’s death. We are in need of more admonition than them.

In this age of fitan (trials) where:

one fitnah is being replaced by an even greater one;

where knowledge and scholars are decreasing;

where ignorant and ignorance have become widespread;

where one reads a few books and believes he has become a scholar;

where one reads a few books on `Aqeedah and thinks that he is safe from committing shirk;

where one does only a few good deeds and considers himself amongst the people of Paradise;

where one, time and again, commits major crimes and still feels safe from the punishment of Hell.

Allaahul musta`aan.

2022-02-22 13:16:49 Place your hand over your chest when frightened!

Allaah تعالى said to Moosa عليه السلام:

وَٱضۡمُمۡ إِلَيۡكَ جَنَاحَكَ مِنَ ٱلرَّهۡبِ

{and draw your hand close to your side to be free from the fear}
[Surah al-Qasas (28): 32]

Meaning: place your hand on your chest so that Allaah will remove the fear from your chest.

In the explanation of the above Aayah, Al-Haafidh Ibn Katheer رحمه الله mentioned in his Tafseer:

Mujahid said: ❝To be free from terror.❞

Qatadah said: ❝To be free from fear.❞

Moosa عليه السلام was commanded, when he felt afraid of anything, to draw his hand close to his side to be free from the fear. If he did that, whatever fear he felt would be gone. Perhaps if a person does this, in following the example of Moosa عليه السلام, and puts his hand over his heart, his fear will disappear or be lessened, if Allaah wills; and in Allaah we place our trust.
[Tafseer Ibn Katheer]

Al-Haafidh Abu Muhammad al-Baghawee رحمه الله commented in his Tafseer:

Ataa’ narrated that Ibn Abbaas رضي الله عنهما said: ❝Allaah تعالى had instructed him to place his hand over his chest (heart), so that the fear – which he got when the stick became a snake – would go away.❞

Ibn Abbaas رضي الله عنهما also said: ❝There is no one who gets scared after Moosa عليه السلام, and he places his hand over his chest (heart), except that his fear will recede.❞

Mujaahid said: ❝Anyone who gets scared and he draws his hand closer to his side will be free from the fear.❞

We know well the reason for the punishment, we know the reason for these hardships, we know the reason for the sorrow and grief. So, stop blaming others and blame your own sins for your miseries.

We commit sins which create havoc in out lives! Example, there might be in our midst someone who has cut off the ties of kinship with his sister, or brother, or parents, or cousin, or uncle, or aunt, or a woman who breaks the ties between her children and their father (her ex). Even if it is just one tie of kinship which you sever unjustly, Allaah will cut you off from His Mercy.

{And those who break the Covenant of Allaah, after its ratification, and sever that which Allaah has commanded to be joined (i.e., they sever the bond of kinship and are not good to their relatives), and work mischief in the land, on them is the curse (i.e., they will be far away from Allaah's Mercy); And for them is the unhappy (evil) home (i.e., Hell).}
[Surah al-Rad (13): 25]

{Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship? Such are they whom Allaah has cursed, so that He has made them deaf and blinded their sight.}
[Surah Muhammad (47): 22-23]

Abu Bakrah رضي الله عنه reported the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ as saying: ❝There is no wrong action which Allaah is swifter to punish in this world – in addition to the punishment which He has stored up for the wrongdoer in the Hereafter – than oppression and cutting off ties of kinship. [The swiftest of good deeds in retribution is the (act of) fulfilling the ties of kinship. So much so, that it is possible that a family can be evil, but their wealth and their numbers will increase if they fulfill the ties of kinship.]❞
[Saheeh Ibn Hibbaan (440). Part of the Hadeeth is narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan (4902), Ibn Majah (4211), al-Tirmidhee (2511), Adab Al Mufrad of Imaam al-Bukharee, and al-Tabaraanee and authenticated by Shaikh Al-Albaanee in as-Saheehah (918). The second part was also authenticated by Shaikh al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jaami (5705)]

The one who cuts off the ties of kinship is cursed, is removed from the Mercy of Allaah, and part of this punishment is that the tranquility is removed from the heart. The one who is under the curse of Allaah, how can he live a good life? Rather, his will be covered by grief, his sorrow and distress will only multiply, and his heart will only harden, and he will not find any peace or tranquility.

Our sins have put a barrier between us and Allaah, then how do we expect to find solace during hardships and losses?!

Shun the sins, turn to Allaah in obedience and repentance, supplicate to him using the Duaa taught by the Prophet ﷺ to be said during hardship and anxiety, and patiently wait for the relief from Allaah.

The relief and help from Allaah is not far from us, but we have blocked its path with our sins!

2022-02-21 06:30:49 O you who has been overtaken by grief and sorrow!

Contemplate, how many sins have we committed because of which sorrow and grief have been multiplied in our lives?!

Because of one sin – that he ate from the forbidden tree - Aadam عليه السلام was expelled from the Jannah. And yet see how many sins we commit in our daily lives which keep us out of the Jannah of this world?! There is Jannah in this world!

From the Jannah of this world is:
1) when Allaah is pleased with us,
2) doing deeds to seek nearness to Him,
3) engaging in His remembrance,
4) offering the obligatory Salaah (prayers) are all part of the Jannah of this world.

Whoever refuses to enter the Jannah of this world, is like the one who is refusing to enter the Jannah in the Hereafter.

As Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله said: ❝There is no (true) comfort for man, or enjoyment, or pleasure (or satisfaction), or perfection except through knowing Allaah تعالى and loving Him (as such), and when feeling calm and tranquil while making His Dhikr (remembrance), and when finding joy and pleasure in trying to get nearer to Him (through obedience and worship) and yearning to meet Him. This is the Jannah (Paradise) of this worldly life, like how there is no comfort for him in the Hereafter nor success except by being in His (Allaah's) company, in the House of Delight, in the Jannah of the next life. For a man there are two Jannah, he will not be able to enter the second one if he does not enter the first one. I heard Shaikh al-Isaam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله saying: ❝There is a Jannah in this world, whoever does not enter it will not be able to enter the Jannah of the Hereafter.❞❞
[Madaarij al-Saalikeen (1/452)]

Do you not see that a person may have lost his whole family in a car accident, yet he is patient and calm, and pleased with the Decree of Allaah, whereas, if just the car of anyone of us were to break down, we would lose our mind; or if any harm were to befall us, we would be on the verge of losing our Deen, and we quickly start thinking bad about Allaah – that Allaah only intends bad for us and not good. As Allaah تعالى mentioned:

{And among mankind is he who worships Allaah as it were, upon the very edge (i.e., in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face (i.e., reverts back to disbelief after embracing Islaam). He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss.}
[Surah al-Hajj (22): 11]

Why is it that this person was tried severely and yet is patient and pleased, whereas we might not even face a fraction of what he has suffered, and we are already falling apart? It is because of the sins that the hardships increase, and griefs become more severe.

It was one act of disobedience which got Aadam عليه السلام expelled from the Jannah.

It was one act of disobedience which made Yunus عليه السلام to be thrown in the sea, and to be swallowed by a whale (or a big fish), and to be covered with three layers of darkness - the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea, and the darkness in the belly of the whale.

It was one act of disobedience on the day of Uhud and the victory was changed into defeat.

It was one act of disobedience and Banee Israaeel were made to wander aimlessly for forty years through the land.

So, do not belittle the sins. Sins are a burden which weigh us down in the battle against hardship and grief. Our shield against all the hardships and sorrows is in the obedience of Allaah and His worship.

So, O you who is overwhelmed by grief and sorrow! Search your book of deeds! Is your book of good deeds heavier than your book of evil deeds? I do not know about your sins, and you do not know about my sins, but each one is aware of his own sins that he has done - secretly and openly.
