On Helplessness

Recently the news has been difficult for us, giving us grim pictures of pandemic misinformation, breakthrough cases and twenty years down the drain.

So it makes sense that for some, we might feel helpless to be in our (often more better) situation at home.

So what can you do with all this helplessness?

Recognise it. Validate what you're experiencing. Understand what happens when helplessness arrives. Does it make you doomscroll? Are you feeling more anxious and guilty?

Experience it. Emotions can flow in and out of our daily routine. Give yourself the space and safety to experience helplessness. Cry if you need to. Take a moment to breathe. Feel it.

Talk about it. You don't have to experience this feeling on your own. Talk about it with someone you feel safe with. Forward this text to a person you know who's experiencing it. You'll start to realise that helplessness can be a helpful, and shared experience too.

Don't be afraid to feel something like this.

Weekend Reads

It's the weekend. To celebrate, we've compiled a list of reads and learning to help you give your emotional muscle a good workout.

Love your Body. A great guide on exploring and embracing the physical presence you provide to the world around you. Link.

Toxic Workplace. Yet another piece of research that highlights the negative impact and effects of toxic behaviour at work. Managers, do your due diligence. Link.

Internal Resistance. AKA being lazy. There's nothing wrong with procrastinating, and this explains why embracing that can be a tough, reflective, but helpful experience. Link.

Athletes and Mental Health. A wonderful article celebrating the athletes that never underestimated the need to recognise their own mental limits, say no, and self-care. Link.

Have a great weekend all. Love yourself, and take care.

Bullying in the Office

We always talk about bullying taking place in high school and college. But what about the workplace? In the US, 65% of workplace bullying comes from supervisors and bosses. Can't imagine what the number's like here.

Here's a download on workplace bullying behaviours:

Excessive performance monitoring. The kind that makes you lose confidence in your own work.

Humiliation and verbal abuse. When feedback can demoralise you instead of making you empowered and better.

Purposely misled about work duties. Maybe it means being put to fail, or maybe it's just another way of showing how much they're better.

The thing is - bullying can be subtle and invisible. But just remember, if most people would see a specific behaviour as unreasonable, then it probably is.

Stay safe out there. @Mellowmillennial

Say What You Mean

You ever been in a situation where someone says one thing, but means the other? Or how about when you ask a friend 'how's work?' and they'll just give you a very simple "great" - no body language, no smile, nothing but a helpless sigh.

One way to measure a person's emotional wellbeing is to see how congruent they are with their emotions and feelings.

Do their words match with how they're expressing themselves?
Are they fully expressing the emotions they want to feel?
Is there something in the way of their ability to express themselves?

We all deserve to feel safe to express what ever emotions we experience. Maybe instead of measuring life by what we do and how successful we are, we should measure by how comfortable we truly are with our own feelings?

On Representation

Feeling represented in our own culture and media is something that everyone should experience; whether it'd be a character from a movie or a video game hero, or your favourite play and novel.

But why does it mean so much to us?

It reaffirms our existence. Seeing yourself on the screen helps establish that we exist, and we're allowed to exist in this world.

It challenges our loneliness. When we watch someone that embodies our own self, it debunks our own belief that we're isolated from the community.

It empowers our ability to connect. Being able to feel your own stories in someone else's story elevates our own capacity for empathy.

Think of the last time you felt your saw yourself in a movie, anime, video game, or lyrics. Now share it with someone who you care about.

Let's celebrate what it means to see ourselves.
