On this day in 1639 the Treaty of Berwick was signed between England and Scotland

It ended minor hostilities the day before Archibald Johnston was involved in the negotiations before King Charles was forced to sign the treaty. The agreement, overall, officially ended the First Bishops' War even though both sides saw it only as a temporary truce. After the treaty was signed, King Charles immediately began to gather the resources he needed in order to strengthen his armies. At the beginning of the Second Bishops' War, the agreement was broken. After a disastrous skirmish at Kelso between the English advance guard and the Scottish Covenanter Army, the Earl of Holland fled back to the king's headquarters at Berwick-upon-Tweed. The Earl of Antrim failed to establish negotiations in order to bring the Irish army over. This, along with the unsuccessful English naval campaign at Hamilton, meant that Charles was forced to sign a truce. He conceded to the Scots the right to a free church assembly and a free parliament

A summit is to be held in Scotland by pro-abortion groups chaired by Sturgeon to look into banning vigils by anti-abortion groups near hospitals or clinics carrying out abortions.

Green MSP Gillian Mackay is pushing for the holding of a vigil or protest to be made into a criminal offence punishable by jail.

Leaving aside the right and wrongs of abortion, this is a worrying move by the illiberal so-called liberals in Scotland. If we allow this ban to come in force, backed up by a criminal penalty, we are severely restricting free speech and the right to hold peaceful demonstrations in Scotland.

This time it may be for anti-abortion groups, but who knows what and whom the intolerant left will target next in their quest to take away people's right to free assembly and expression?

On this day in 1390 Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan, called the Wolf of Badenoch burned Elgin cathedral and all the church owned buildings in Elgin. His tomb at Dunkeld is pictured above.

In 1389 Alexander sought the intervention of the Bishop of Moray, Bishop Alexander Bur, to bring his marriage to an end. The Bishop came down on the side of Eupheme, and when Alexander then expelled her to make way for his mistress of the moment, Mariota Athyn, he was excommunicated by the Bishop of Moray.

It was Alexander's response to his excommunication that led to Alexander descended on Moray at the head of a large number of "wild, wykked Hieland-men." Alexander sacked the town of Forres, before heading east, destroying Pluscarden Abbey en route to Elgin where he arrived in 17 June 1390. Here he burned much of the town and destroyed Elgin Cathedral, the second largest cathedral in Scotland, widely known as the Lantern of the North.

On this day in 1548 a French army landed at Leith outside Edinburgh at the invitation of the Scottish Court after an English Invasion.

The first French troops arrived in Leith, soon to total 8,000 men commanded by André de Montalembert sieur d'Esse. The infant Queen Mary was removed to France the following month and the English cause was effectively lost. Most of their troops had left by the end of 1549. In the following years the French interest became dominant in Scotland with increasing numbers of French troops concentrated in Haddington, Broughty Castle, and Leith.

From 1548 onwards work began fortifying the port of Leith initially with a bulwark at the Kirkgate and at the chapel by the harbour.

An Orthodox Christian working at a chicken processing factory was fired after refusing to remove a crucifix at work.

Maybe there are health and safety considerations given the type of work the gentleman was involved in. But you have to wonder if the company would have been so quick to sack a member of staff wearing a Sikh, Hindu, Jewish or Muslim symbol at work without trying to find some way to accommodate the worker's beliefs and their desire to wear such a symbol of faith.

Patrick Grady, the SNP MP for North Glasgow, was found guilty by an independent Westminster committee of making unwanted sexual advances towards a young SNP staffer. Yet his only punishment appears to be a possible two day suspension from parliament.

The SNP have taken no action against him. Quite the opposite, it appears, with the victim, who still works for the SNP, reporting that he has been ostracised by SNP MPs, MSPs and staff for making the complaint. He says that the SNP have been more interested in protecting Grady than anything else.

These are the people that run our country. Politicians who are prepared to protect a sex pest and let him carry on in office. What else are the SNP covering up, one has to wonder. The people of Scotland deserve better than the SNP.

On this day in 1567 the Battle of Carberry Hill occured outside Musselburgh between Mary Queen of Scots forces and the Lords who opposed her. Though called a Battle there was very limited fighting.

A number of Scottish lords objected to the rule of Mary, Queen of Scots, after she had married the Earl of Bothwell, who was widely believed to have murdered her previous husband Lord Darnley. The Lords were intent to avenge Darnley's death. However, Bothwell escaped from the stand-off at Carberry while Queen Mary surrendered. Mary abdicated, escaped from prison, and was defeated at the battle of Langside. She went to exile in England while her supporters continued a civil war in Scotland.

A new report has told the Scottish Government that they have to set up a new museum dedicated to Scotland's supposed role in the slave trade and colonialism.

At a time when national and local government budgets are shrinking, the NHS and education are a shambles, and the Scottish arts sector is heavily underfunded, spending millions to open a new museum to concentrate on a tiny part of Scotland's history to appease a tiny section of society is wrong.

The obsession with colonialism and slavery can do nothing to help build a modern Scotland, but it will encourage grievances and resentment within society. While at the same time giving a view of our history that will be manipulated to suit the agenda of a small group of people
