The SNP are facing a hard dilemma: the Scottish budget deficit is predicted to hit a staggering £3.5 billion by 2026/27. This deficit is going to cause major problems. If the SNP do not address it, it can only lead to a cataclysmic financial problem in the future. But addressing it would mean going against what they have always said they would never do: cutting services and/or using the powers they have to raise taxes.

The SNP have let their mismanagement of the economy and budget worsen further in the last years and it needs to stop. They are not a safe pair of hands to guide our nation through the rocky waters we find ourselves in just now, especially as it looks as if an even bigger storm is brewing.

Scotland needs a new government to assure our people's future.

2022-05-28 10:31:10 On this day in 1887 the Udston mining disaster happened at Udston colliery, Hamilton.

73 miners died in a firedamp explosion at Udston Colliery. Caused, it is thought, by unauthorised shot firing the explosion is said to be Scotland's second worst coal mining disaster.

At 9:07 am, an explosion ripped through the Splint Seam destroying everything in its path.

The explosion manifested itself in a volume of flame and dust at the number two or downcast shaft, followed seconds later by a volume of flame from the upcast or number one shaft which set fire to the wooden sheds or headings above it.

An initial assessment of the damage by one of the managers revealed both compartments of No 1 shaft and one of the compartments of No 2 Pit were blocked by the cages used to lower the miners.

By 3 pm all the men in the Ell and Main Coals were evacuated and it was discovered that these coal seams were not damaged from the explosion. Two men were found alive at the bottom of pit 2, however all others were deceased.

Homelessness applications have risen by 16.5% over the last quarter in Scotland and there has been a 2,052% spike in court proceedings initiated by local authorities coming after the end of a temporary ban on evictions during the pandemic. Last year in the same period they evicted seventeen people; this year the total stands at 336.

Scotland is facing yet another homelessness crisis. Some of it linked to the ongoing cost of living crisis we are experiencing.

Yet as we face increasing rates of homelessness amongst the Scottish population the politicians in Holyrood seek to bring increasing numbers of immigrants into our country.

On this day in 1661 Archibald Campell , 1st Marquis of Argyll was executed in Edinburgh.

At the Restoration, Argyll presented himself at Whitehall, but was at once arrested by order of Charles II and placed in the Tower of London (1660), before being sent to Edinburgh to stand trial for high treason. He was acquitted of complicity in the death of Charles I, and his escape from the whole charge seemed imminent, but the arrival of a packet of letters written by Argyll to Monck showed conclusively his collaboration with Cromwell's government, particularly in the suppression of Glencairn's Royalist rising in 1652. He was immediately sentenced to death, his execution by beheading on the 'Maiden' taking place on 27 May 1661,before the death warrant had even been signed by the king. He was attended in his final hours by Rev Archibald Hutchison of Tolbooth Parish (contained in St Giles Cathedral) which oversaw the Tolbooth prison.

His head was placed on the same spike upon the west end of the Tolbooth.

A bit of good news for the people of Bathgate. The council had planned to house 81 men from Africa and the Middle East in the Cairn Hotel. Now the Home Office have informed the council that the hotel will not be housing any refugees.

It appears that the council announcement was made before anyone had actually talked to the hotel owners and confirmed it could be used. The hotel, it appears, was not keen in taking this form of client as it said it would have a detrimental effect on the hotel's reputation.

Dumping these young single men in the centre of small Scottish towns has a detrimental effect not just on the hotels used but also on the towns themselves, bringing many social issues to the area connected to the young men.

The SNP and other political parties are determined to turn Scotland into a dumping ground for refugees from the Third World. It is good to see their plans being blocked, and hopefully many other hotels will refuse to be used for this purpose in the future.

On this day in 1652 the last Royalist stronghold anywhere on the eastern side of Scotland, Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven, surrenders after an eight month siege, though not before the Scottish crown jewels also called the honours of Scotland, had been smuggled out to safety in Kinneff Old Church.

Sir George Ogilvie (or Ogilvy) of Barras was lieutenant-governor of the castle . Ogilvie surrendered on 24 May, on condition that the garrison could go free. Finding the honours gone, the Cromwellians imprisoned Ogilvie and his wife in the castle until the following year, when a false story was put about suggesting that the honours had been taken overseas.[

On this day in 1714 John Stuart ,third Earl of Bute was born.

He served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1762 to 1763 under George III.. He was the first prime minister from Scotland following the Acts of Union in 1707 and the first Tory to have held the post.

He was born in Parliament Close, nearby to St Giles Cathedral on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh on 25 May 1713, the son of James Stuart, 2nd Earl of Bute, and his wife, Lady Anne Campbell. He attended Eton College from 1724 to 1730. He went on to study civil law at the Universities of Groningen (1730–1732) and Leiden (1732–1734) in the Netherlands, graduating from the latter with a degree in civil law

A close relative of the Clan Campbell (his mother was a daughter of the 1st Duke of Argyll), Bute succeeded to the Earldom of Bute (named after the Isle of Bute) upon the death of his father in 1723. He was brought up thereafter by his maternal uncles, the 2nd Duke of Argyll and Archibald Campbell, 3rd Duke of Argyll, 1st and only Earl of Ilay.

The consultation on gender reform in Scotland has received 11,000 submissions. An analysis of them showed that the vast majority, nearly 60%, are opposed to the SNP-proposed changes to the gender identification procedure.

The SNP and the other parties that support the changes are completely out of step with what the Scottish public want. Amongst other things many Scots feel that the proposed changed are a danger to women and their rights.

The SNP in a previous consultation ignored over 17,000 submissions and concentrated on the views of 200-odd charities and pressure groups. We can probably expect the same from the increasingly undemocratic SNP and will see them push these changes through against the wishes of the people they are meant to represent.

On this day in 1153 Malcolm IV became the king of Scotland at the age of 12.

Malcolm IV, nicknamed Virgo, was King of Scotland from 1153 until his death. He was the eldest son of Henry, Earl of Huntingdon and Northumbria and Ada de Warenne. The original Malcolm Canmore, a name now associated with his great-grandfather Malcolm III , he succeeded his grandfather David I, and shared David's Anglo-Norman tastes.

Called Malcolm the Maiden by later chroniclers, a name which may incorrectly suggest weakness or effeminacy to modern readers, he was noted for his religious zeal and interest in knighthood and warfare. For much of his reign he was in poor health and died unmarried at the age of twenty-four.
