People seeking to rent in the private sector are being forced by some landlords and rental agencies to enter into a bidding war with other renters to secure accommodation.

While not illegal in Scotland, it certainly is unethical. It is probably time that it was made illegal. Rents in Scotland have been rising quickly in recent years and people are struggling to pay the advertised rates, never mind being forced to pay potentially hundreds more on top.

Scotland needs a major increase in social rented housing. We have seem some new housing being built, but not in the numbers that are needed to accommodate the number of people searching for rentals. We are also seeing housing being assigned to migrants - both in the private rented and social rented sectors. This situation can only worsen if the SNP and other parties get their way and massively increase immigration in the coming years.

On this day in 1831 James Clerk Maxwell was born in Edinburgh

Maxwell FRSE FRS was a Scottish mathematician and scientist responsible for the classical theory of electromagnetic radiation, which was the first theory to describe electricity, magnetism and light as different manifestations of the same phenomenon. Maxwell's equations for electromagnetism have been called the "second great unification in physics"where the first one had been realised by Isaac Newton.

His discoveries helped usher in the era of modern physics, laying the foundation for such fields as special relativity and quantum mechanics. Many physicists regard Maxwell as the 19th-century scientist having the greatest influence on 20th-century physics. His contributions to the science are considered by many to be of the same magnitude as those of Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein.

Hypocrisy and corruption run deep within the SNP, it appears. The SNP administration is constantly talking about its stance on human rights, but then an SNP MP accepts not just one but two luxury trips to the repressive Gulf state of Qatar - a state that has a terrible reputation for human rights abuses and links to Islamic extremist terror.

The SNP Angus MacNeil accepted over £13,000 in free trips and hospitality to Qatar in less than six months.

Meanwhile over 6,500 foreign workers have died on construction projects in recent years in Qatar, women have no rights in the Gulf state, the country has proven links to bribery, and it is a major funder of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Glasgow Life, the organisation that manages Glasgow's cultural assets for the council, is an organisation that is completely captured by the woke agenda.

At a time when the organisation is contending with shrinking budgets, crumbling buildings and no clear vision of its future they have been spending tens if not hundreds of thousands promoting a woke agenda.

Positions have been created specifically for new curators dealing with the subjects of LGBT and slavery while other posts are being cut.

Labels and interpretation panels are being rewritten - at a cost of well over £100,000 - to reflect a new woke narrative on past events and the story of items in the collection.

Items that have been in the collection for decades are being handed over to countries that claim they were illegally collected, a move that could see the city's museums emptied of many significant items if the trend continues.

These museums are wasting taxpayers' money to appease a tiny minority in society.

On this day in 1488 the Battle of Sauchieburn occurred.

The Battle of Sauchieburn was fought at the side of Sauchie Burn, a stream about two miles (3 km) south of Stirling, Scotland. The battle was fought between the followers of King James III of Scotland and a large group of rebellious Scottish nobles including the future Alexander Home, 2nd Lord Home, who were nominally led by the king's 15-year-old son, James, Duke of Rothesay. James III was killed in the battle, and his son succeeded him as James IV.

The Duke of Rothesay ascended to the throne, and reigned as King James IV for 25 years. James IV bore intense guilt for the indirect role which he had played in the death of his father. He decided to do penance for his sin, constantly wearing an iron belt around his waist, next to the skin, to which he added weight every year throughout his life.

On this day in 1719 the battle.of Glen shiel occurred.

The Battle of Glen Shiel took place in the West Scottish Highlands, during the 1719 Jacobite Rising. A Jacobite army composed of Highland levies and Spanish marines, was defeated by British troops, reinforced by a Highland Independent Company.

The rising was backed by Spain, then engaged in the 1718 to 1720 War of the Quadruple Alliance with Britain. It was intended to support a landing in South-West England, which was cancelled several weeks before; contemporaries on both sides viewed its failure as having fatally damaged the Jacobite cause.

Glen Shiel was the only battle of the 1688 to 1746 Jacobite Risings where the Jacobites remained on the defensive, rather than employing the Highland Charge.

The mountain where the action was fought is called Sgurr na Ciste Duibhe; a subsidiary peak named Sgurr nan Spainteach, or 'Peak of the Spaniards', commemorates the Spanish marines.
