Saving the planet, one apple at a time Did you manage to spot the spoilt fruit? Throwing away food, whether it’s spoilt produce or leftovers, isn’t just wasteful; it also harms the environment.
When food rots in a landfill, it produces vast amounts of methane — a greenhouse gas that traps more heat than carbon dioxide. If we could cut food wastage altogether, we would reduce up to 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions!
While we can all do our part to prevent food waste, some companies, such as Apeel and Hazel Technologies — which #TemasekInvests in — are tackling the crisis by extending the shelf-life of fresh produce. Apeel is doing so by protecting fruits and vegetables with organic coatings, while Hazel Technologies is slowing the rot with innovative packaging inserts.

Love nature, hate crowds? No problem Instead of visiting conventional parks, how about going on an adventure in the city? You just might be surprised by the amount of urban green spaces you’d find!
Take Marina One for example. Developed by M+S Pte Ltd, a portfolio company of Temasek, the multi-purpose green complex is home to a 3,700-sqm garden that features over 350 types of plants and trees.
Fun fact: the brown slats that extend slightly beyond the buildings are solar screening devices! These help to keep out direct sunshine and maintain a comfortable temperature, reducing the need for additional cooling.

There’s no silver bullet to climate change
The world is at a tipping point, and we need to harness the best of nature and mankind’s ingenuity to truly step back from the brink. Companies like Haldor Topsoe and Surbana Jurong, which #TemasekInvests in, are developing carbon capture, usage and storage (CCUS) technologies to not only capture but also utilise carbon dioxide sustainably!
Haldor Topsoe, for example, is working on a project in Denmark that involves converting captured carbon dioxide into fuel. The goal is to ultimately transform it into sustainable fuel for ships and planes — powering a greener way to travel.
Meanwhile, Surbana Jurong is part of a local consortium collaborating with the National Research Foundation to develop decarbonisation processes. Such CCUS technologies could be rolled out across carbon-intensive sectors like energy, construction, chemicals and IT to reduce carbon footprint.
