Serving up convenience…and chilli crab?!

Here’s a look at some of the most uncommon vending machines from around the world; from gold bars to chilli crab (you read that right!), these machines have been known to dispense them all. Here’s another one from our sunny island — smart vending machines that dispense hand sanitisers!

These #BYOBclean vending machines were specially designed to automate the labour-intensive process of mixing and distributing the sanitisers. They have to adhere to a strict ratio of concentrate to water (1:100) to avoid foam formation, and only use water that is around the pH of 7.

It took many rounds of trial and error — and over a year’s worth of hard work — before the team managed to perfect the machines!

Keeping the (green) lights on!

#DidYouKnow: traditional lithium-ion batteries today can only store renewable energy for up to four hours! For the world to run fully on renewable energy, we will need longer-lasting and affordable batteries that can store clean energy at scale.

For example, Form Energy, an energy storage startup that #TemasekInvests in, has developed a solution that can deliver 1 megawatt of power for 150 hours. That’s enough to power about 110 million LED light bulbs!

Meanwhile, we have also joined forces with BlackRock to advance transformational decarbonisation solutions so the world can achieve a net-zero economy by 2050.

Make every day Earth Day!

Climate change is an existential threat — and we must all do our part to fight it. Thankfully, we have a powerful ally in the form of Mother Nature.

This Earth Day, we’re focusing on natural climate solutions, which leverage nature to combat greenhouse gas emissions. This includes protecting our forests and mangroves, which are climate mitigation powerhouses!

On top of that, protecting mangroves could help reduce poverty and increase economic resilience by increasing access to sustainable livelihoods, such as through sustainable coastal fisheries.

The secret to fertiliser-free food: microbes!

Agritech company Pivot Bio, which #TemasekInvests in, has developed the world’s first nitrogen-fixing microbes. These microbes, which are planted along with seeds in the fields, help capture nitrogen from the air and turn that into nutrients for crops as they grow.

This enables farmers to produce food more efficiently and rely less on synthetic fertilisers, which emit greenhouse gases — a win for us and the environment!
