Hands up, those of you who used your SingapoRediscover vouchers to visit Gardens by the Bay recently!

Did you know that a few decades ago, this area was nothing but…sea?!

Hear from Ho Wah Hin, an engineer of 43 years and current Deputy Director of Coastal Engineering at Surbana Jurong, on how he helped to build Marina Bay from the ground up, and the satisfaction he feels when he drives past the area.

Fun fact: Marina Bay is now also a testing ground for sustainability initiatives!

What happens when tech meets aquaculture?

It may lead to fewer seasonal price spikes! Unlike traditional fish farming methods — which depend heavily on weather conditions (that means higher prices amid rainy season ) — vertical farming not only helps strengthen food security but can also produce cleaner and more sustainable seafood.

Hear from Eric Ng of Apollo Aquaculture Group, a company that #TemasekInvests in, to learn how he's using tech to make aquaculture a more attractive industry.

240km in six days — how’s that for a goal?

Our colleague, Freddie Allen, took part in the Marathon Des Sables, a 240-km ultramarathon to raise funds for a social mobility charity in 2019. ‍ How did he complete what’s often hailed as “the toughest foot race on Earth”? Being able to reframe his goal to something far bigger than himself definitely helped, said Freddie.

More on his journey here: https://tmsk.sg/2cy

It pays to be green!

Natural climate solutions (NCS) — using natural processes to reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions — not only helps in the fight against climate change, but it also makes business sense.

Together with Conservation International, NUS Centre for Nature-based Climate Solutions and DBS Bank, we recently released a report that looks at how protecting our tropical forests and mangroves can improve the resilience of our environment, businesses and livelihoods.

Closing the loop on food waste

As we indulge in celebratory feasting this holiday season, let’s think twice about sending leftover food straight to the bin. According to the FAO, we could reduce about 8% of total greenhouse gas emissions if we stop wasting and losing food as a planet.

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we’re supporting innovative ways to tackle food waste, such as fermenting it or feeding it to black soldier fly maggots!

Meanwhile, NUS’ Prof Rudolf Meier and his team are hoping to one day develop an efficient food recycling system for Singapore through insect farming! More on their project, supported by Temasek Foundation Ecosperity, here: https://tmsk.sg/85fdd
