MOLECULAR ECOLOGY

At the molecular level, the study of ecology focuses on the production of proteins, how those proteins affect the organism and the environment, and how the environment in turn affects the production of various proteins.

In all known organisms, DNA gives rise to various proteins, which interact with each other and the environment to replicate the DNA.

These interactions lead to some very complex organisms. Molecular ecologist study how these proteins are created, how they affect the organism and environment, and how the environment in turn affects them.

Arctic fox

The Arctic fox is primarily a carnivore that lives inland, away from the coasts. They are dependent on the presence of smaller animals (most often lemmings) to survive .

Arctic foxes also hunt for sea birds, fish, and other marine life. Smaller rodent populations waver between times of abundance and scarcity, which leaves the Arctic fox vulnerable when these creatures are low in numbers.

The Arctic Ocean is about 5.4 million square miles—about 1.5 times as big as the US—but it is the world’s smallest ocean. Learn more about the Arctic and what WWF is doing to help protect it.

The Arctic fox was impacted tremendously by the fur trade because of its extremely high quality pelt. It's still hunted now for its fur, particularly by native populations who live in close proximity to them. The fur trade has decreased dramatically and the Arctic fox is not as vulnerable to overexploitation as it once was.

MANGROVES

Mangroves are defined as assemblages of salt tolerant trees and shrubs that grow in the intertidal regions of the tropical and subtropical coastlines.

They grow luxuriantly in the places where freshwater mixes with seawater and where sediment is composed of accumulated deposits of mud.

Mangroves are self-propagating plants and are physiologically adapted to salinity stress and to water logged anaerobic mud is high.

Mangrove ecosystems act as nurseries for fin fish, shell fish, crustaceans and Mollusca.

The mangroves besides providing a number of ecological services also play a major role in protecting coastal areas from erosion, tidal storms and surges (tsunamis).

SEA GRASS

Sea grasses are (angiosperms) marine flowering plants that resemble grass in appearance.

They produce flowers; have strap-like or oval leaves and a root system.

They grow in shallow coastal waters with sandy or muddy bottoms & require comparatively calm areas.

They are adapted to life in the salt water.

Sea grass beds physically help to reduce wave and current energy, to filter suspended sediments from the water and provides habitat for marine invertebrates and fishes.

Seagrass beds are widespread in lagoon & in such areas, the population of fish and migratory birds are also higher due to the availability of food and shelter.

EUTROPHICATION

Eutrophication is a syndrome of the ecosystem, response to the addition of artificial or natural nutrients such as nitrates and phosphates through fertilizer, sewage, etc. that fertilize the aquatic ecosystem.

It is primarily caused by the leaching of phosphate and - or nitrate-containing fertilizers from agricultural lands into lakes or rivers.

The growth of green algae on the lake surface layer is the physical identification of a Eutrophication.
