Did you know that the Novena Church’s actual name is the Church of St Alphonsus? Since then, it’s become more popularly known as the Novena Church. The word “Novena” derives from "nine" in Latin, referring to the Catholic Church's nine days or weeks of devotion.

After being gazetted for conservation in 2011, the historic building was closed for substantial restoration work before reopening in 2017. The architecture of the structure is influenced by the Bible scriptures of King Solomon's temple, with a Gothic-inspired look that reflects the religion's early years. This historic landmark along Thomson Road remains a local landmark and community touchstone for all.

Swipe through to view more about its architectural details, and blessed Good Friday to all!

The Singapore River’s story is one of transformation. After a massive clean up efforts in the 1990s, it has evolved to become the popular lifestyle destination we all know and love today, filled with hotels, shops, restaurants, and waterfront housing. Set against the signature skyline of Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD), the river stretches 3km long and is flanked by restored shophouses and warehouses, giving the area its unique and eclectic charm.

The Singapore River is also the first precinct to come on board our pilot Business Improvement District (BID) programme, which supports efforts by private businesses and communities to enhance the vibrancy of a precinct.

This April, the annual Singapore River Festival organised by Singapore River is back, with the digital fishing game #thegreatrivercleanup to teach players about the heritage of the Singapore River, and its inspiring journey over the years.
