The Marina Barrage may be a famous spot for many photoshoots, but this iconic landmark is much more than just a pretty face.

This government-commissioned dam spanning the Marina Channel was built for three purposes: water supply, flood control and recreation. However, with its vast open spaces, purposefully-placed green patches, and city skyline backdrop, this engineering marvel has become not just a beloved local attraction, but one that is often showcased internationally.

Singapore’s 15th reservoir is also a haven for Singapore’s marine life, and this includes the otters we all love so much! Scroll through the images to view more!

Jurong Town Hall is a building that retained the zeitgeist of Singapore’s industrialisation and transformation. Constructed in 1974, this iconic building served as the headquarters of JTC until 2000, housing many visionary minds that worked to improve the lives of Singaporeans throughout our nation-building.

The winner of the 2018 Architectural Heritage Award has since been gazetted as a national monument and refurbished as a key landmark in Jurong – currently serving as a hub for trade associations. The building’s nautical elements are thought to be inspired by vessels at the Jurong Shipyard Corporation, giving the building the appearance of a ship’s hull with the clock tower as its mast.

Did you know? Syed Alwi Road has been described as an ‘architectural feast’ of shophouses.

There, you’ll be able to spot a range of architectural styles from the late 1800s to the 1960s, which contributes to a visually interesting streetscape.

The area was gazetted for conservation in 2006, after a comprehensive public consultation with building owners in the area. It is an important historical street block that links up the Little India and Jalan Besar conservation areas, so go explore it the next time you’re in the vicinity!

Here's how Armenian St was transformed from a four-lane road into a permanent pedestrian space with an urban park!

Back in 2015, the area's stakeholders first saw potential for reclaiming more road space for public spaces. After they partnered government agencies to explore various possibilities, Armenian St was permanently pedestrianised in 2019. Today, it has become a delightful urban park in the heart of our city, providing a comfortable walking experience and a spot to relax.

Chinatown’s not the only place for photo-worthy Lunar New Year decorations – this year, Raffles Place joins in the fun too!

From now till 15 February, check out these larger-than-life decorations inspired by mandarin oranges, lanterns and more placed around Raffles Place Park and the surrounding buildings. They are part of the first-ever precinct-wide Lunar New Year light up in Raffles Place, and if you’re around after sundown, watch them be illuminated with fairy lights from 7pm to 12 midnight daily.

Enjoy the rest of the Lunar New Year!

A blessed and safe Lunar New Year to all!

Have you spotted these meaningful installations and placemaking pieces around Chinatown and Kreta Ayer recently?

Check out these large-scale tiger lanterns and festive decorations a short walk down from Chinatown Point, conceptualised by a team of students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). We love how they add creative flair to our streets while paying homage to the heritage and culture of this festive season!

Next, find rows of decorated tiger sculptures on display at the heart of Kreta Ayer Square, designed by local and global artists and brought to life by WWF Singapore. These sculptures are part of a larger initiative to raise awareness about tiger conservation and climate change.

Like and save this post if you are planning to visit these spots… and have a ROAR-ing good time with your loved ones this holiday!

You may have attended a concert or visited the Heritage Gallery at the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, the oldest performing arts venue in Singapore. But #didyouknow that the two buildings were constructed years apart in the 1860s and 1900s, serving many purposes through history? From housing municipal offices, acting as a memorial hall, and even functioning as a makeshift hospital during WW2, the building has stood the test of time and seen it all.

As part of preservation efforts to keep its history alive, the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall has been through major restoration in both its interior and exterior while retaining its iconic Neo-Classical architecture. Various design elements were also retained to ensure that its rich heritage lives on.
