Inquiring of the Lord
A Daily Devotional for April 1, 2021
Read 2 Samuel 2:1, Romans 8:14
Inquiring of the Lord is a reoccurring discipline throughout the bible. We find it both in the old and new testament. It demonstrates that our God has a desire and will to take part our lives.
There were many moments mentioned in scripture where people inquired of the Lord before making a major decision. Sometimes, God would answer by the Urim, another time by the prophets and at times by dreams. In the New Testament, Romans 8:14 tells us that “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.”
A French Scientist who invented the pasteurization process is quoted as saying, “opportunity favors the prepared mind.” Through inquiry, God’s people have often found themselves responsive to a Kairos moment that they would have misused under normal circumstances. The stories below are some themes from the Old Testament.
Transition in life
David having spent his life as a fugitive in caves and enemy territory, he inquired of the Lord. This discipline is significant because one might reason the incumbent is dead, the kingship position is open, David has a lot of supporting civilians and an army; it should be a no-brainier. But David paused, inquired and God not only led him to pursue the kingship but also told him where to begin. 2 Samuel 2:1
Transferring Responsibility
Moses having led the Israelites out of Egypt, recognized that his time to leave the office had come. He was at liberty to reason that God will do whatever he wants. But being a good steward, he inquired of the Lord in regards to his successor Joshua. Numbers 27:18-21:
Going into Partnership
In Joshua 9:14, we read a story where the Israelites got into a bad association in haste with the Gibeonites. The decision was so significant that it can impact future generations to come. God desires that we don’t make such a mistake that it clearly highlights they did not inquire of the Lord.
Life Application
We all have decisions to be made in various dimensions of our life. Some decisions are more serious than others. Some decisions are easily reversible, while others may have eternal consequences. Learning to be dependent on the Holy Spirit should be our lifetime goal as new testament believers.
Prayer
Lord help me to consider your ways.
