The Front End of History!

Read Genesis 15:1-6
Would you be willing to pay 190,373 US dollars for a used pair of unremarkable (in appearance) Converse shoes that sells for 60 US dollars new? But someone did exactly that. Why? It was not just the shoes but what was done through the shoes. The shoes were worn by Michel Jordan in the 1984 Olympic games. In those 60-dollar shoes Jordan scored 20 points in a 96-65 rout of Spain, bringing the US the gold medal.
In Genesis 15 God promises Abraham a child. Can we take a moment to acknowledge that what God promised Abraham wasn’t something particularly extraordinary. This wasn’t the sea splitting or mountains moving. Abraham needed a promise just to have a child! Abraham had to have faith for what everyone else took for granted. Abraham’s servants could not stop having children while Abraham himself struggled and yearned to obtain just one. You can imagine the discouragement and frustration Abraham felt.
But why? Why does it feel like sometimes we have to go through so much to get something that seems so “Ordinary”? But could it be that what we consider ordinary is far from it? What was going to come out of Sarah’s womb was not just a child but a nation! And the reason Abraham and Sarah faced such extra ordinary barriers was because there was an extra ordinary assignment. But it is easy for us to recognize this having the benefit of knowing the end of the story.
"For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." 2 Corinthians 4:17
The difference between us and the collector mentioned earlier is that the collector paid on the back end of history. He was willing to pay the price for a finished story. But God is asking us to pay it on the front end of an unfinished story. And the currency we are being asked to pay in is not in dollars, but it is in patience, trust, and faith. So, it comes to this, do we trust the story (The Promise) that God is giving us on the front end of history. If we do, the story justifies the cost.
