Mature #3: The Voice
A Daily Devotional for March 20, 2021
Read John 10:14&27, Matthew 16:13-19
God matures everything in time. He invests time to get maturity in return. And we’ve seen that maturity in God’s eyes is not how much we know but rather our appetite to know more. It’s our hunger. "Blessed are those that hunger..."(Matthew 5:6). Our hunger draws us closer to God and also draws out of God. The more we draw out of God, the more we know Him. The Father’s will for us is to be "intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally" (Ephesians 1:18MSG).
Jesus here says that He knows that His sheep know Him because they know His voice. They’re not estranged 0to me because they’re not estranged to my voice. The mature know Him and the evidence is that they know His voice. According to Paul, infants are tossed and blown about by everything they hear because they can’t discern the shepherd’s voice (Ephesians 4:14). Infants are unstable but the mature are steady.
God can not work with instability. He can’t use infants. You don’t build on unstable foundation. Peter gets a powerful revelation of who Jesus is and Jesus excitedly blesses him. But I don’t think Jesus was excited because he was flattered by what Peter said about him. He knows who he is, he doesn’t need the fanfare. But Jesus’ excitement came from how Peter got the revelation. He didn’t get an information(flesh and blood) on Jesus but rather a revelation about him personally. He heard the father’s voice. Jesus said, now you’re no longer Simon(Unstable, infant) but Peter(Rock, stable, mature) and on that I can build.
