2021-11-04 10:20:44 ill-advisedly US Revoked Ethiopia AGOA Eligibility: A Blow to Millions of low-income Workers Welfare

Ethiopia is to be suspended from the United States’ tariff-free African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in 60 days. According to Ethiopian Industrial Parks Development Corporation CEO:
• 30 out of 33 textile factories in the country’s industrial parks export apparel to the US under AGOA & have facilitated employment opportunities to 85,000 Ethiopians.

In 2020, nearly half of country’s export to US was under the AGOA - creating close to 230,000 job opportunities.

“Ethiopia's removal from the AGOA would deal a serious blow to the welfare of millions of low-income workers at a time when Ethiopia's manufacturing industry is registering record monthly output levels,” Mamo Mihretu, an adviser to Abiy, wrote in Foreign Policy magazine in October.

Ethiopian Airlines is establishing its presence in more than six African countries through a management role or strategic partnership with the local carriers, making it a dominant player in the continent.

Next month, the Ethiopian carrier is expected to launch Air Congo, the latest in the string of airlines where it is acquiring stakes as African countries move to revive their ailing national carriers.

The Addis-based carrier is also involved in starting a new airline in Zambia and plans to restart operations in Mozambique.

Dimitrius Kampouris Plc, a garment manufacturer and EL Auto Engineering and Trading Plc, a vehicle assembly, sign agreements with IPDC to secure land in the Bole Lemi and Dire Dawa industrial parks.

It is estimated that Dimitrius will invest Birr 486,540,000 ($11 million) to take over an 18,600 square meter plot of land within the park for the construction of the sheds. EL Auto is also expected to invest Birr 700 million.

The Council of Ministers has declared nationwide state of emergency effective Tuesday November 2, 2021. The state of emergency will remain in force for six months.

• The State of Emergency also stipulates citizens to bear resident ID cards wherever they move. Any illegal trading activity and involves economic sabotage is strictly prohibited.
• Misuse of power given by the government and any illegal activity that might inflict mal governance is prohibited by the state of emergency.
• Anybody suspected over relation with the terrorist group will be detained without any arrest warrant
• Random raid could be conducted by security forces, and unregistered arms will be confiscated by the government.
• Any broadcast, publication will be banned if suspected of any moral or related support to the terrorist group, and institutions will be ordered to sack any suspected journalist accordingly.
