Many students find it difficult to focus or pay attention at school nowadays.
What are the reasons?
What can be done to solve this?
It is true that many students in schools have problems with their concentration. I believe that modern technologies are to blame in this situation, and some necessary steps can be taken to help students overcome this difficulty.
One of the key factors reducing students’ attention span is modern technologies. This is because many young people spend a considerable amount of their time on mobile phones. When they are using them, they mostly watch short videos on social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram. Watching one-minute videos a lot, young people unknowingly reprogram their brain losing natural capacity to focus. However sad it is, these young people have already got used to focusing on something for as little as one minute. When they have to focus on something for long time, their concentration starts to waver after a minute.
To tackle this problem, both parents and schools should take action. By limiting the time their children spend using their devices, parents can help their children avoid watching short videos, thus eliminating the root of the problem. However, the elimination of the cause may not produce intended results unless schools also step up to the plate. They should make some adjustments to their curriculum so that students can study in an environment that does not let their attention wander. If, for example, schools implement Pomodoro technique, which is known as a concentration booster, students’ ability to focus may greatly improve.
Given that it is mobile phones and social media platforms that negatively affected young people’s ability to concentrate, parents should immediately restrict the use of them. To fully eradicate this problem, schools should also take some measures.
