Many countries aim to improve their Iving standards through economic development but social values can be lost as a result.
Do you think advantages of economic development outweigh the disadvantages?
The improvement of living standards by developing their economy, albeit at the expense of social values, is the main aim of many countries. Although the loss of equality is inevitable, I believe that economic growth is worth pursuing.
Looking firstly at the only disadvantage, it should be noted that there will be inequality between rich and poor people. As the economy of a country grows, rich people get richer, and the poor get poorer. More often than not, it is wealthy people who know how to take advantage of developments in the economy and make fortunes. If it were not for this ability, they would not become rich in the first place. Poor people, on the other hand, are left behind because of their ignorance of the fact that they can also enjoy the economic prosper as much as the rich.
Nevertheless, I believe that an economic development should remain a top priority of countries for two main reasons. Firstly, this can allow people to have high standards of living. Take developed countries for example, their citizens have the opportunity to live their lives to the fullest, unlike those who live in underdeveloped countries. Secondly, countries can eradicate enduring problems once and for all if they have strong economy. In many developing countries, people are still finding it hard to make a living, let alone leading a perfect life. If these countries achieve economic growth, the unemployment rate might drastically drop and lives of people may change for the better as a result.
In condusion, some social values including equality might be at stake if countries are to improve their economy, but it would be wrong to overlook its contribution to the betterment of people's lives. Therefore, I think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
