A new map signed into law last week by Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis will eliminate two Black-led congressional districts in Florida.

On the chopping block: Florida's 5th Congressional District, currently represented by Democrat Al Lawson, which connects Black communities from Tallahassee to Jacksonville. Under the new map, Jacksonville, the city with the largest Black population in the state, is divided into 2 Republican-leaning districts.

Also skewered: the 10th Congressional District, currently represented by Rep. Val Demings, a Black Democrat. The new map reduces Black voters in the Orlando-area district. Demings is currently running for the US Senate. Open / Comment

2022-04-27 19:12:00 Germany's defense concern Rheinmetall has submitted an application to the German government for approval to supply 88 Leopard 1A5 tanks to Ukraine, the Welt newspaper reported, citing documents available to it.

According to the newspaper, the application was submitted to the German government at the end of last week. The cost of previously used Leopard 1A5 tanks is about 115 million euros. The proposal to transfer the tanks was received by Kiev on 14 April, the first deliveries are ready to be made "within a few weeks": the 1st 22 tanks - in 6-8 weeks, the remaining 66 tanks will be gradually transferred until the end of 2023. In accordance with federal public health guidelines, officials and visitors have not been required to wear masks or socially distance at large White House events. Covid cases in Washington have declined since their peak in early January, when the country was facing a wave of Omicron variant cases, but have been rising recently.

President Joe Biden has issued his first endorsement of the 2022 campaign cycle and backed incumbent Rep. Kurt Schrader of Oregon, who is facing a progressive primary challenger supported by some high-profile liberal figures and groups.

"We don't always agree, but when it has mattered most, Kurt has been there for me. And in doing so, he has helped to pass much of my agenda into law - making a huge difference in the lives of the Oregonians he represents and all of America," reads Biden's endorsement of Schrader, which was released over the weekend.

The President said Schrader, who has held his seat for 13 years, "has had my back from early on and played an important part in the progress we have made as a nation."
