2021-11-18 12:10:03 Often confused with the Weeping Tea-tree (Leptospermum madidum) with its needle-like leaves, the False Ru (Baeckea frutescens) is a much smaller tree that can grow up to 6m tall. The entire plant is used in folk medicine for its medicinal qualities as a remedy for sunstroke, fever, menstrual problems and many more.

Public Consultation on Proposed Amendments to Endangered Species Act

We’re kicking off a month-long public consultation to seek your views on proposed amendments to the Endangered Species Act! This Act enables us to implement and enforce regulations under the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

The amendments proposed include stiffer penalties for illegal trade of CITES-listed wildlife species, as well as greater clarity on regulations and stronger enforcement powers.

Find out more and share your feedback here!

A curious sight to behold!

While most trees bear flowers and fruits on branches, those belonging to the Cannon Ball Tree (Couroupita guianensis) grow directly on its trunk. These large showy flowers develop into rounded fruits that remain on the tree for a year or more. At maturity, the fruit falls off making a loud thud – just like a cannon ball dropping to the ground!
