SAMARIA
A Devotional for June 22, 2022
Read Luke 10:25, Acts 1: 7, Matthew 10: 5, John 4:1- 25
In Matthew 10: 5 we read Jesus telling his disciples not to go to the towns of the Samaritans, that is at the beginning of the disciple’s ministry in which he tells them only to go to the lost children of Israel. He knew what the cultural background of these two nations were but instead He went himself. He didn’t stumble there by chance, but He had to go there because there is something that he can only do. To give them a drink of the living water, to deal with that darkness and to shine a light in it.
To proclaim that the kingdom of God is near because they wouldn’t have listened if they heard it from the people that were treating them badly for years. He needed an amazing testimony to break that resistance, a testimony of a broken woman, a testimony of the outcast and testimony of the one who has the concept of worship but who has lost a truck and he found that in one Samaritan. Her instruction with Jesus became the testimony so many needed, not just to hear about him but also to interact with him face to face. Mind you Jesus did not change Himself; He just became more approachable. Even the woman was surprised that a Jew was talking to her because the other Jew’s wouldn’t. He allowed her to ask him questions without judgment and he answered her curiosity.
At the ascension, the disciples were curious about the restoration of Israel's kingdom and Jesus' answer was about becoming a witness, our great commission! Since Jesus Himself has laid the foundation now, He asked the disciples to go to Samaria after receiving the Holy Spirit. He did not only say Israel, but He also included Samaria intentionally. If He was intentional to preach the kingdom to Samaria, so should we!
