The Ethiopian Soil Information System (EthioSIS) has launched a state-of-the-art soil database in a bid to enhance agricultural productivity.

Geo Referenced soil samples from a 2.5km radius throughout Ethiopia’s arable land and detailed maps providing up-to-date soil fertility data have been produced and made ready through the database, it is indicated.

The Ethiopian Soil Information System (EthioSIS), a project launched by the Ethiopian Government’s Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA) in 2012.

Geda Special Economic Zone is expected to create jobs for more than 7 million people, job-creation for the youth being its ultimate goal. It will be constructed in 23,656 hectares land in Mojo, Oromia. It plans to integrate economic facilities ranging from market, industry, logistic services to recreation. This project is to pave the way to facilitated trade in not just Ethiopia but also the horn. The modern cities are to be constructed in phases, and the first phase is to be concluded in 5-10 years, while the last in 30-40 years.

Zhao Zhiyuan, Chinese Ambassador to Ethiopia, along with higher Ethiopian officials, has just recently visited the special economic zone.

Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa says the firm’s plan to launch commercial operations in Ethiopia is on course despite the political uncertainties necessitated by the ongoing Tigray conflict.

Ndegwa said Safaricom Ethiopia PLC, a subsidiary of Safaricom PLC,  is already setting up operations ahead of the commercial launch scheduled for mid-2022 even while he admitted that the “telco’s breakeven targets may be impacted by the current conflict .”

The shake-up of the potentially lucrative sector — currently dominated by state-owned Ethio Telecom — is a cornerstone of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s economic reform agenda.
