2021-11-13 10:18:07 KenGen Completes Second Geothermal Well in Ethiopia

Power producer Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has completed drilling of a 3,000 metres geothermal well in Ethiopia, its deepest well yet in the neighbouring nation, having surpassed its target of 2,750 metres.

The company says the project is the second out of eight wells it was contracted to drill by the state-owned electricity producer, Ethiopia Electric Power Company.

Ethiopia is eyeing renewable energy sources to increase electricity capacity to meet rising power demand from commercial and household customers.

2021-11-13 09:05:37 Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will begin Generating 700 MW Electricity by 2022

The commencement of long-awaited mega-dam producing 700 MW electricity after one month is expected to boost the country’s installed power generating capacity by 14%.

Nearing completion on the Abay river, the $4 billion GERD is self-financed by Ethiopians with crowd funding through raising in the form of selling bond and employees contributions a portion of their incomes, will generate 5150 MW hydropower at full capacity to relieve country’s severe energy shortage.

Currently, Ethiopia has a total installed power generating capacity of about 4,967 MW. And, only about 45% of the country population has access to electricity and the figure drops to 32% in rural areas of the country.

Once completed GERD will be the largest dam in Africa with a total volume of 10.4 million cubic meters for renewable energy.

2021-11-13 07:33:18 #Ethiopia: October Inflation Dropped Slightly from September 34.8% to 34.2% year-on-year

Ethiopia's Central Statistics Agency said on Thursday inflation slowed down to some extent in October to 34.2% year-on-year from the previous month’s 34.8%.

The report indicated a slight decrease in prices of food items such as teff, wheat, rice, meat, milk, dairy products, egg, locally produced food oil, butter, salt, and red pepper species), while non-food items exhibited a rise in prices – i.e., clothes, shoes, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, household items, jewelry construction materials, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals.

In the next three months, Ethiopia's Central Statistics Agency has forecasted a decline in the price of food items.

Banks in Ethiopia process around 500K birr transactions via digital channels every day and Birr 260bn (~8% GDP) on an annual basis. Notably, CBE has for the first time seen more of its customer transactions (62%) taking place via digital channels rather than at bank counters in 2021.

In terms of mobile wallet accounts offered directly by banks or by tech companies in partnership with banks, there are 10mn-plus mobile wallet accounts as of 2020 vs 60mn-plus regular bank accounts.
