Agree / Disagree

Q: Governments spend millions of dollars each year in their space programmes. Most recently, Mars is the focus of scientists’ attention. Some people think this money would be better spent on dealing with problems closer to home. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Answer:

There is always going to be a debate over the amount of money spent on space exploration. Scientific studies of Mars and planets may provide information that is useful on earth. However, some people believe this cannot justify the huge amounts of money spent on space research when there is a greater need for it here.

In the past, different countries used space exploration to compete with each other. For example, the US and the USSR raced each other to see who could put a man on earth first. It would have been much easier and cheaper if they had pooled resources and information, and made a joint expedition into space. Fortunately, nowadays this is happening more and more, and thus less money is being wasted.

Nevertheless, some critics believe that all money given to space exploration is wasted. They argue that if millions of dollars spent on space research were put into health and education programmes around the world, many lives would be significantly improved. It is certainly likely that if this money were invested in crop development in different parts of the world, we could save many lives in countries where people do not have enough food. It is very difficult to argue against these criticisms.

In my opinion, we need a balance between how much money is spent on space exploration and how much money is invested into solving problems here on earth. With continued co-operation between nations over space travel, more will be achieved for less money. This should leave more money to be spent on problems at home.

Discuss both views

Q: Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Answer:

Our world is facing a wide variety of environmental challenges nowadays. These range from pollution of the atmosphere and the associated global warming phenomenon to the depletion of natural resources. While some argue that biodiversity decline is the most pressing environmental issue, I believe other environmental problems are more critical and urgent.

On the one hand, the extinction of some species of flora and fauna is a serious and alarming issue. Every day we hear that more and more species of plants and animals are on the edge of disappearing because of global warming and human encroachment. The most obvious victim is coral which is at risk of extinction because the ocean water has grown more and more acidic as a result of all the carbon dioxide it has absorbed. Eventually, the loss of biodiversity will pose a significant threat to mankind, including the a reduction in the quality and amount of food resources, clean water, and breathable air.

On the other hand, it cannot be denied that the global environment is facing more serious problems. Firstly, rising seas and extreme weather events, due to climate change, are having devastating consequences in many regions around the world. In the vast majority of developing countries, people depend heavily on the natural environment but are now facing more frequent and longer droughts, forest fires and desertification. Similarly, air pollution is considered a significant environmental issue with serious effects on people’s health. Humans are suffering from a wide range of respiratory diseases from being exposed to contaminated air. In addition, global warming and pollution of the biosphere are expected to compound other environmental problems, including the extinction of many kinds of species.

In conclusion, the loss of biodiversity is not the most critical environmental issue we face. Others, including climate change and air pollution, are more urgent due to their devastating effects.

Problem / Solution

Q: The birth rate in most developed countries is predicted to begin to fall over the next 50 years. By 2040 it is estimated that over one third of the population in most developed countries will be aged 65 and over. What effects will these predictions have on developed countries if they prove true? What can be done now to deal with this situation?

Answer:

Nowadays, most people worry about overpopulation and living in crowded cities. However, it is predicted that we will have the opposite problem by the year 2040 when one third of the population will be 65 or over and birth rates are predicted to decline. What effect will it have on our society?

By 2040 the percentage of the population aged 65 or over will have risen significantly, to more than 30%. This means that fewer people will be working, and therefore fewer people will be paying income tax. In the future, it may be necessary for the government to increase the official retirement age to 70 or even older. When today’s 30-year-olds are in their sixties it is unlikely that they will enjoy the relaxed lifestyle that today’s older generation can expect when they give up work. Governments will therefore need to make sure that this older generation is healthy and fit enough to continue working.

However, I believe that the biggest impact will be on the younger generation. In 2040 the younger generation will need to work much harder to support the large number of older people. If this trend continues then it is possible that our entire culture will change. For example, most marketing companies today try to target the younger generation with their products and advertisements. If the majority of population is older, then this will change and companies will begin to target older generation.

So, what can be done to deal with this situation? Firstly, I believe that governments of developed countries should find ways to encourage people to have larger families and increase the birth rate. Secondly, I believe that they should encourage migration from developing countries so that the problem of over-crowding can be solved.

Writing Task 2 in Uzbekistan — 28.08.2021

Advantage / Disadvantage

Q:Online shopping has various advantages for consumers, but it may also have several disadvantages including the loss of individual privacy.
Do the advantages of online shopping for consumers outweigh the disadvantages?

Answer:

Buying things from internet has numerous benefits, albeit it may also have some drawbacks, like the loss of individual privacy. In my view, the benefits of online shopping for customers more than negative points and in this essay, I will explain why.

Firstly, it is convenient for everyone, especially, for parents with small children and people who work throughout the day as online shopping venues are available any time, day or night. Secondly, prices of things are cheaper than stores or shops and also you can compare prices from various vendors. In addition to this, it has more payment methods, consequently, people can pay for things in variety ways, such as PayPal or bitcoin. Finally, but not least, it is easy for buyers to access other consumers' reviews about the product, which they want to purchase, if they are not sure.

On the other hand, there are a number of disadvantages of online shopping, such as the loss of individual privacy since internet is full of hackers who can easily steal your identity. Another negative point is that you can not touch or try things on and as a result of it, we can not know the quality of product and also it is suitable for us or not. Following this, after you order something you will have to wait its delivery. It takes time depend on online shopping sites from a week to a month to deliver your order.

In conclusion, whereas there are several drawbacks of buying online, like time and possibility of loosing privacy, I think the advantages of online shopping with convenience and cheap prices outweigh the disadvantages significantly.

Advantage / Disadvantage

Q:Online shopping has various advantages for consumers, but it may also have several disadvantages including the loss of individual privacy. Do the advantages of online shopping outweigh the disadvantages?

Recently, the internet has provided a beneficial advancement such as online shopping which created convenience and a chance to save time while customers may have a number of problems as well. This essay will analyze both sides and present that beneficial sides of online shopping outweigh the drawbacks.

Answer:

Nowadays, as technology expanded significantly, it has contributed to the change of the way people shop with its trend called online shopping. It has several positive sides for community in terms of safety, time-saving and convenience. More precisely, as people can purchase clothes, technology appliances, or household products on the network platforms with only one click, they can stay home and be safe, especially during the Coronavirus situation. Also, it means that they can spend their spare second doing their other vital things, since wandering around the markets in order to find the desired item, is a waste of time. Additionally, people can have a wide range of choices in internet shopping, so that they are able to find whatever they want in all probability, and it makes the shopping condition way much easier.

However, nothing is without its problems. In most cases, consumers are required to pay for items in advance, which makes them hesitate about their privacy and relevance. The reason is that the guarantee for the quality of the selected product is not sometimes provided by the company. For example, when a buyer purchases a mobile phone and receives it with a cracked screen, he or she is unfeasible to return it. Moreover, if the product arrived after a long period, more than a shopper had willed, this would make customers disappointed in that service. Nevertheless, these issues are attainable to address with governmental approaches like a set of regulations and security services.

As we have seen, people are supplied with an opportunity to shop online conveniently and by saving time, albeit with several adverse aspects like insecurity and privacy. Still, it can bring more comforts and ease to people's shopping condition if the problems are solved.
