2022-02-12 07:00:00 New CDC Study Reveals COVID-19 Booster Shot Effectiveness Wanes Significantly After Only 4 Months

@COVID19Up: A nationwide study from the U.S. CDC is the first to show that immunity against COVID-19 begins to wane significantly four months after receipt of the third dose of an mRNA vaccine (Pfizer or Moderna).

Waning immunity was observed during both the Delta and Omicron variant waves in similar fashion to how mRNA vaccine effectiveness wanes after a second dose. Until this study, little was known about durability of protection following three doses, especially during periods of Delta or Omicron predominance in the U.S.

"The mRNA vaccines, including the booster shot, are very effective, but effectiveness declines over time. Our findings suggest that additional doses may be necessary to maintain protection against COVID-19, especially for high-risk populations," said study co-author Brian Dixon, Ph.D., MPA, Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health director of public health informatics.

@COVID19Up: Less than a week after the UK proposed criminalizing the posting of “knowingly false” information online, England’s National Health Service (NHS) has taken down its own social media video over inaccurate information.

Last week, NHS England posted a video on its Twitter account to promote COVID-19 vaccination in kids. The video claimed that 1% of children will be hospitalized because of COVID-19, 136 kids in the UK had died because of COVID-19, and 117,000 children have “long COVID.”

But some, including Dr. Robert Hughes, a clinical research fellow at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, questioned the accuracy of the data.

“As both a parent and scientist who has been involved in research on symptom duration and severity of COVID in children, the cited statistics didn’t make sense to me,” Hughes wrote in an article in UnHerd. “The idea that 1% of children with COVID are hospitalized for it didn’t pass the ‘sniff test.’”

Hughes contacted the Office of the Statistics Regulator about the numbers. The Statistics Regulator agreed that it was important that the NHS provides accurate figures.

“It is important that figures provided by NHSE&I are accurate and reliable,” the Office of the Statistics Regulator said. “In this case the claim made in the video fell short of these expectations—we contacted NHSE&I and it acknowledged that the data were historic and had methodological shortcomings. We are therefore glad that the content has now been removed from Twitter.”

Before its removal, the video had already been widely shared.

@G3News: On Thursday (Feb. 10), Russia said it has “deep” concerns over Israel’s ongoing air campaign in Syria, warning the continued airstrikes could escalate tensions in the region and threaten civilian air traffic.

“Israel’s continuing strikes against targets inside Syria cause deep concern,” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said. “They are a crude violation of Syria’s sovereignty and may trigger a sharp escalation of tensions. Also, such actions pose serious risks to international passenger flights.”

She said Russia opposes “attempts to turn Syria into a scene of armed confrontation between third countries.”

@G3News: After massive pressure from the German government, Telegram is taking action against hate speech on the platform. The company has blocked a total of 64 channels in the past few days, including that of the anti-Semite Attila Hildmann.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser made it clear that she wants to take further action against Telegram.

"On Telegram we are constantly experiencing new waves of hatred and threats against people and against our democracy," Faeser said. "We act quickly and consistently against this."

"Telegram must no longer be an accelerator for right-wing extremists, conspiracy ideologues and other agitators. Death threats and other dangerous hate mail must be deleted and have clear criminal consequences," she said.

The interior minister sees the deletion as a success of the weeks of pressure on Telegram. "The Federal Criminal Police Office has significantly intensified the investigations. From day one in office, I put pressure on me to get Telegram to cooperate. This pressure is working."

2022-02-12 00:22:20 Biden Orders 3,000 More Combat Troops to Poland Amid Ukraine Crisis

@G3News: The Pentagon is sending another 3,000 combat troops to Poland to join 1,700 who already are assembling there in a demonstration of American commitment to NATO allies worried at the prospect of Russia "invading" Ukraine, a senior defense official said Friday (Feb. 11).

The additional soldiers will depart their post at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, over the next couple days and should be in Poland by early next week, according to the defense official, who provided the information under ground rules set by the Pentagon. They are the remaining elements of an infantry brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division.

In addition to the U.S. troops deploying to Poland, about 1,000 U.S. soldiers based in Germany are shifting to Romania in a similar mission of reassurance to a NATO ally.

@COVID19Up: Pfizer is postponing its request to the FDA to expand the use of its two-dose COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years.

Pfizer announced on Friday (Feb. 11) that it will instead wait for data on a three-dose series of its COVID-19 vaccine before asking for authorization.

Pfizer said in December that two doses didn’t generate a strong enough immune response in its trial of children ages 2 to 4. Still, the company decided to ask the FDA to authorize these first two doses anyway, with a plan to submit additional data on the third dose in April, the company said.

The FDA was expected to publish an analysis of Pfizer's two-dose data today, ahead of an advisory committee meeting next week. The meeting has now been postponed.

Two people familiar with the FDA’s plans said there had already been a lot of pushback from vaccine experts who had concerns that Pfizer’s data wasn’t sufficient.

@G3News: The CIA has a secret, undisclosed data repository that includes information collected about Americans, two Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee said Thursday (Feb. 10). While neither the agency nor lawmakers would disclose specifics about the data, the senators alleged the CIA had long hidden details about the program from the public and Congress.

Sens. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Martin Heinrich of New Mexico sent a letter to top intelligence officials calling for more details about the program to be declassified. Large parts of the letter, which was sent in April 2021 and declassified Thursday, and documents released by the CIA were blacked out. Wyden and Heinrich said the program operated “outside the statutory framework that Congress and the public believe govern this collection.”

There have long been concerns about what information the intelligence community collects domestically, driven in part by previous violations of Americans’ civil liberties.

“These reports raise serious questions about the kinds of information the CIA is vacuuming up in bulk and how the agency exploits that information to spy on Americans,” Patrick Toomey, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. “The CIA conducts these sweeping surveillance activities without any court approval, and with few, if any, safeguards imposed by Congress.”
