2021-09-24 14:46:38 Complain to Allaah alone!
By Shaikh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah

“al-Sabr al-Jameel” (the good patience الصَّبْرُ الْجَمِيلُ) is that patience in which there is no complaining (towards the creation). Yaqoob عليه السلام said:

{I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allaah}
[Surah Yusuf (12): 86]

Even though he also said:

﴿فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ وَاللَّهُ الْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَى مَا تَصِفُونَ﴾

{So (for me) patience is most fitting. And it is Allah (Alone) Whose help can be sought against that which you assert}
[Surah Yusuf (12): 18]

Complaining to Allaah (about the harm that has befallen you) does not contradict or negate “the good patience”.

And whenever Umar Ibn al-Khattaab رضي الله عنه used to recite in the Fajr prayer:

﴿إِنَّمَا أَشْكُو بَثِّي وَحُزْنِي إِلَى اللَّـهِ وَأَعْلَمُ مِنَ اللَّـهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ﴾

{I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allaah and I know from Allaah what you do not know}
[Surah Yusuf (12): 86]

He used to weep so profusely that his sobbing would be heard in the last rows.

(Complain to the Creator) instead of complaining to the creation!

(Complaining to the Creator is permissible) because the one who is complaining is doing so based on the situation he is in, either (beseeching Allaah) to remove the thing which is harming him, or seeking (from Allaah) that which is beneficial for him. A person has been commanded to beseech the Creator instead of the creation. Allaah تعالى said:

{So when you have finished (from your occupation), then stand up for Allaah’s worship (i.e. stand up for prayer). And to your Lord (Alone) turn (all your intentions and hopes and) your invocations.}
[Surah al-Sharh (94): 7-8]

And the Prophet ﷺ said to Ibn Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: ❝If you ask, then ask Allaah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allaah [alone].❞
[Sunan al-Tirmidhee (2516) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

And it is a must that a person should adhere to two things:
1) To do that which he has been commanded to do and to shun that which has been prohibited.
2) And to be patient when a thing which has Decreed befalls him.

The first is from Taqwaa (piety) and the second is patience (Sabr).

[Majmoo al-Fataawa of Ibn Taymiyyah (10/666-667)]

[TN: The Prophet ﷺ also said to Ibn `Abbaas رضي الله عنهما: ❝And know that what has passed you by [and you have failed to attain] was not going to befall you, and what has befallen you was not going to pass you by. And know that victory comes with patience, and relief after affliction, and ease after hardship.❞ [Mustadrak of al-Haakim (6304)]

B) Al-Nafs: Definition

2) al-Rooh (Soul). And when the soul is in the human body, it is also referred to as: “al-Nafs” (self).

Shaikh al-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyah, رحمه الله said: ❝al-Rooh (the soul) - which manages the body, and which departs from it with death - is the soul which is breathed into it (while it was in its mother’s womb); and it is also (called as) al-Nafs (the self) which departs from it with death.

In the Hadeeth, in which it is reported that the Prophet ﷺ slept through the time of the prayer, he ﷺ said: ❝Allaah captured your (Arwaah) souls (i.e. made you sleep) when He willed, and returned them (to your bodies) when He willed.❞

And Bilaal excused himself, saying: ❝O Messenger of Allaah! The One who took your (Nafs) self was the One who took my (Nafs) self.❞

Shaikh al-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyah, رحمه الله also said: ❝The word: al-Nafs (self), is used to express the “self” which chases its desires or which is incited by the desires, in contrast to the word: “al-Rooh” (soul), for it is not used to express as such.❞

2021-09-23 13:00:38 Invoke your Lord with hope and fear, and be a doer of good:

Aayah #

{And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allaah is near to the doers of good.}
[Surah al-A`raaf (7): 56]

Aayah #
Allaah تعالى mentioned about the family of Zakariah عليه السلام:

إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا يُسَارِعُونَ فِي الْخَيْرَاتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًا وَرَهَبًا ۖ وَكَانُوا لَنَا خَاشِعِينَ

{Indeed, they (Zakariah and his family) used to hasten to good deeds and supplicate Us in hope and fear, and they were to Us humbly submissive.}
[Surah al-Anbiyaa (21): 90]

Aayah #
Allaah تعالى mentioned about the Believers:

تَتَجَافَىٰ جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

{Their sides forsake their beds, to invoke their Lord in fear and hope, and they spend (charity in Allaah's Cause) out of what We have bestowed on them.}
[Surah Sajdah (32): 16]

Notes:
In all these three Aayaat (verses of the Qur’aan), Allaah تعالى mentioned three things in combination:

To supplicate to Him with Hope: The hope, the determination, the assurance that whenever you supplicate to Him, He تعالى will respond to your call.

To supplicate to Him with fear: Fearing His punishment when one disobeys Him.

And be a doer of good: Be pious and obedient servants of Allaah in general and all the time. But specifically, precede and succeed your supplications with good deeds. Example: pray and then supplicate or supplicate and give charity. The example is the Hadeeth of the three men who were trapped in the cave and each supplicated mentioning his good deeds as Tawassul (Waseelah).

But what we mostly do is the opposite. We show hopelessness in Allaah’s promises, despair of His Mercy, and fear that our supplications will not be answered, and then end up abandoning supplicating to Him.

So, when we want our supplications to be answered, we need to become an obedient slave of Allaah first:

وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ

{And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad ﷺ], concerning Me – (inform them that) indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. SO LET THEM RESPOND TO ME [BY OBEDIENCE] AND BELIEVE IN ME that they may be [rightly] guided.}
[Surah al-Baqarah (2): 186]

B) Al-Nafs: Definition, its’ different states, and Duaa

{And by Nafs (person or soul, etc.), and Him Who perfected him in proportion; then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him. Indeed, he succeeds who purifies his own self (i.e., obeys and performs all that Allaah ordered); and indeed, he fails who corrupts his own self (i.e., disobeys Allaah by doing every kind of evil wicked deeds).}

a) Definition:

A human being consists of two parts:

1) al-Badan (Physical body). The other Arabic words for a body are, “al-Jism” and “al-Jasad”. “al-Jism” is used while referring to a body that has a soul in it, whereas “al-Jasad” is used to refer to a body that has no soul in it.

In the Hadeeth about the martyrs, when Allaah will ask them if they need anything more in Jannah, the martyrs will reply, saying: ❝O Lord, we would like for You to put back our souls into our Ajsaad (bodies) so that we might fight for Your sake once again.❞

In addition, in the Qur’aan, the statue of the calf, which the Banee Israa’eel had made out of their ornaments, is also described as “Jasad”.

2021-09-22 12:50:09 Allaah تعالى says (interpretation of the meaning):

{And (remember) when Ibraaheem and (his son) Ismaaeel were raising the foundations of the House (the Kabah at Makkah), (saying): “Our Lord! Accept (this service) from us. Verily! You are the All-Hearer, the All-Knower.”}
[Surah al-Baqarah (2): 127]

Ibn Katheer رحمه الله reported in his Tafseer, in the explanation of this Aayaah, that when Wuhaib Ibn al-Ward read this Aayaah, he began to weep.

He said: “The Khaleel of al-Rahmaan, building the House (Ka`bah) of al-Rahmaan, at the instructions of al-Rahmaan, and yet he (Ibraaheem) feared that it will not be accepted from him!”

❝And WE seek refuge with Allaah from the evils of our souls❞

A) Definition of Istiaadhah:

Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله continues:

iii) Seeking refuge either with the dead, or with people who are alive but are not present nor able to grant refuge, then this is Shirk. In this regard Allaah تعالى says:

﴿وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِّنَ الْإِنسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِّنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا﴾

{And there were men from mankind who used to seek refuge with men from the jinn, and so that only increased them in transgression.}

iv) Seeking shelter with some person or in some place, or the like, as long as it is something which can serve the purpose of providing shelter, then this is permissible. And the evidence is the Prophet’s ﷺ saying, speaking about Fitan: ❝Whoever exposes himself to them will be destroyed by them, and whoever finds a place of shelter or refuge from them, then let him take shelter in it❞

He ﷺ also explained this place of shelter or refuge in his saying: ❝So whoever has camels should stick to his camels...❞

There also occurs in Saheeh Muslim from the Hadeeth of Jaabir رضي الله عنه that a woman from the tribe of Banoo Makhzoom stole something, so then she was brought to the Prophet ﷺ, and she sought refuge with Umm Salamah.

(Imaam) Muslim also reported in his Saheeh from the Hadeeth of Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها that the Prophet ﷺ said: ❝A man will seek refuge in the (Sacred) House (i.e., Ka`bah) and an army detachment will be sent against him...❞

However, if it is the case that someone is seeking refuge from the evil of an oppressor, then it is obligatory to shelter him and grant him refuge as far as is possible. But if he seeks refuge in order to help him to commit something forbidden, or to flee away from an obligation, then it is forbidden to shelter him.❞

❝And WE seek refuge with Allaah from the evils of our souls❞

A) Definition of Istiaadhah:

Shaikh Ibn al-Uthaymeen رحمه الله continues:

ii) Seeking refuge in one of Allaah’s Attributes, such as His Speech, His Greatness, His Might, and so on. The proofs for this are the sayings of the Prophet ﷺ:

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

Aoodhu bi kalimaati-llaahit-taammaati min sharri ma khalaq

❝I seek refuge in the Perfect Words of Allaah from the evil of what He has created.❞

He ﷺ also said:

wa aoodhu bi Adhamatika an ughtaala min taḥtee

❝and I seek refuge in Your greatness from being swallowed up from beneath me.❞

Also, his ﷺ saying in the supplication recited when suffering from pain:

أَعُوذُ بِاللهِ وَقُدْرَتِهِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا أَجِدُ وَأُحَاذِرُ

Aoodhu billaahi wa Qudratihee min sharri maa ajidu wa uhaadhiru

❝I seek refuge in the Might and Power of Allaah from the evil of what I feel and am wary of.❞

The Prophet ﷺ said:

Allaahumma innee aoodhu biridhaaka min sakhatika

❝O Allaah, I seek protection in Your pleasure from Your anger❞

And the saying of the Prophet ﷺ, when Allaah تعالى sent down His saying:

﴿قُلْ هُوَ الْقَادِرُ عَلَى أَنْ يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَاباً مِنْ فَوْقِكُمْ﴾

{Say He is the One fully able to send punishment upon you from above}

He ﷺ said:

Aoodhu bi Wajhik

❝I seek refuge with Your Face.❞

2021-09-19 16:50:28 Two Types of Duaa:

The Messenger of Allaah ﷺ said:
❝The supplication made between the Adhaan and the Iqaamah is never rejected.❞
[Sunan Abu Dawood (521) and Sunan al-Tirmidhee (212, 3595) and graded as “Saheeh” by Shaikh al-Albaanee]

In explanation of the above Hadeeth, Shaikh Saaleh al-Fawzaan حفظه الله said:

❝Many people neglect to supplicate between the Adhaan and Iqaamah. They preoccupy themselves with the recitation of the Qur’aan. No doubt that the recitation of the Qur’aan is a glorious act, but the recitation of the Qur’aan has its own time. That one utilizes this time in making Du’aa and Dhikr is better, because the confined Duaa* in its proper time is better than making general Duaa (at any other time). As for the recitation of the Qur’aan then it is general, (meaning) it can be recited at all times. But this time (between the Adhaan and Iqaamah) should be allocated for making Duaa. So, utilizing this time in making Duaa, Dhikr and seeking forgiveness is better than reciting the Qur’aan. This is what one should be aware of.❞

NOTES:

*Duaa are of two types: General (مطلق) and Confined (مقيد).

The general Duaa is not limited by time or place, and it can be said at any time.

But any Duaa which is limited to a specific time or place is referred to as “Confined Duaa”.

Example of time restraint: Duaa said between the Adhaan and Iqaamah, Duaa said by a Fasting person or a traveler, Duaa in the last third of the night, Duaa on the Day of Arafah.

Example of place restraint: Duaa in Sujood, Duaa in the final Tashahhud (before the Salaam), Duaa between Rukn al-Yamaanee and al-Hajr al-Aswad while making Tawaaf around the Kabah.
