The African Union Commission declared 2021 as the Year of Art, Culture and Heritage, and to this end, a series of Pan-African events, called “Africa Celebrates”, has been packaged to celebrate Mother Africa.

It is scheduled to run between October 15 and October 22 at The Club Addis and the African Union Headquarters in Ethiopia. Africa Celebrates is an eight-day festival that will highlight the continent’s prowess in music, fashion, dance, cuisine, arts and crafts. It will also include business fora.

AVTOVAZ, the local manufacturer of LADA vehicles has signed an agreement with Bazra, a local motor manufacturing company, to set up a LADA car assembly plant in Ethiopia. This agreement was signed on August 31, 2021, and the assembly will take place in Kombolcha.

The assembly line will start to assemble 5000 vehicles annually, with a plan to reach 10,000 units in 5 years. Bazra motors is also in preparation to agree to assemble GAZ minibuses and KAMAZ buses and trucks in the near future.

Akobo Minerals, a Norway-based gold exploration company, is pleased to announce that the Ethiopian Council of Ministers has accepted the large-scale mining license application that had been submitted by the company on the 7th of September 2021.

This will allow the company to bring forward mining plans for the high-grade Segele gold mineralization. The future Segele Mine will also be a positive development for Ethiopia and the community near the project. The final stage in the process is the signing of a Mining Agreement which is scheduled for the September 30, 2021.

Here are a few indicators of the performance:

• Passenger traffic to, from and within Ethiopia in June 2021 was 30% less than in June 2019, a significant improvement on the 47% drop for January 2021 compared to January 2019.
• Ethiopia’s June performance was well ahead of the -66.6% (compared to 2019) recorded for the African continent.
• Passenger demand is expected to recover to pre-COVID levels by 2023.

After the expiry of a $1.5 billion loan facility approved last year, Ethiopia is now requesting for a new credit arrangement to access $1.5 billion concessional loan from the IMF.

This will give Ethiopia access to concessional poverty reduction & growth trust resources, replacing the expired facility, if approved. “We look forward to discuss the modalities of IMF engagement going forward,” said Eyob Tekalign, State Minister of Finance.
