فَقَدْ - وَاللهِ - عَمَّ الفَسَادُ،

al-bidaʿ (ie: innovation) is now apparent,
وَظَهَرَتِ البِدَعُ،

Sunnah is now hidden,
وَخَفِيَتِ السُّنَنُ،

And there is reduction in saying the truth.
وَقَلَّ القَوَّالُ بِالْحَقِّ،

If a scholar should speak with truthfulness and sincerity, he would be opposed by many scholars of his time,
بَلْ لَوْ نَطَقَ العَالِمُ بَصِدْقٍ وَإِخْلاصٍ لَعَارَضَهُ عِدَّةٌ مِنْ عُلَمَاءِ الوَقْتِ،

They will detest him and declare him ignorant, la ḥawla wa la quwwata illa billāh (ie: there is no movement or power except through Allah’s will)."
وَلَمَقَتُوهُ وَجَهَلُوْهُ - فَلاَ حَوْلَ وَلاَ قُوَّةَ إِلاَّ بِاللهِ -.

أم حسان الكوفية

Sufyān (al-Thawrī), Ibn al-Mubārak and others narrated from her (ie: were her students).
كان سفيان وابن المبارك وغيرهما يزورونها،

ʿAbd Allah b. al-Mubārak mentioned: Sufyān mentioned a woman of Kūfa who was called Umm Ḥassān, a woman of great ijtihād and worship.
عبد الله بن المبارك قال: ذكر سفيان الثوري امرأة بالكوفة يقال لها أم حسان ذات اجتهاد وعبادة.

So (we went to visit her) and entered her home, and we saw that there was nothing in it except a small worn-out mat.
فدخلنا بيتها فلم نر فيه شيئاً غير قطعة حصير خلق

al-Thawrī said to her: “If you write a note to some of your relatives, they could help change your poor condition.”
فقال لها الثوري: لو كتبت رقعة إلى بعض بني أعمامك لغيروا من سوء حالك.

She replied: “Sufyān, in my eyes you were better (than this) and in my heart you were greater before this moment. I do not ask for things of this world from the One who controls it, owns it and rules over it, so how is it that I would ask those that have no control over it nor rule in it? Sufyān, I swear by Allah, I dislike that a time comes upon me in which I am too busy for Allah, by being occupied with other than Him.”
فقالت: يا سفيان قد كنت في عيني أعظم وفي قلبي أكبر مذ ساعتك هذه، إني ما أسأل الدنيا من يقدر عليها ويملكها ويحكم فيها؛ فكيف أسأل من لا يقدر عليها ولا يقضي ولا يحكم فيها؟ يا سفيان والله ما أحب أن يأتي علي وقت وأنا متشاغلة فيه عن الله تعالى بغير الله.

Sufyān wept at these words.
فأبكت سفيان

كَرِيْمَةُ بِنْتُ عَبْدِ الوَهَّابِ أُمُّ الفَضْلِ القُرَشِيَّةُ الأَسَدِيَّةُ *

The daughter of the muḥaddith, al-ʿadl (ie: the upright and righteous) Muḥammad ʿAbd al-Wahāb b. ʿAlī b. al-Khaḍir b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAlī.
بِنْتُ المُحَدِّثِ العَدْلِ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدِ الوَهَّابِ بنِ عَلِيِّ بنِ الخَضِرِ بنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بنِ عَلِيٍّ،

She was al-Shaykhah, al-Ṣāliḥah (ie: the pious), the one with a long life, (with a connecting chain in ḥadīth) musnīdah al-Shām,
الشَّيْخَةُ، الصَّالِحَةُ، المُعَمَّرَةُ، مُسْنِدَةُ الشَّامِ،

Umm al-Faḍl al-Qurashīyyah al-Asadīyyah, al-Zubayrīyyah, al-Dimishqīyyah (from Damascus), and she was known by “Bint al-Ḥabaqbaq.”
أُمُّ الفَضْلِ القُرَشِيَّةُ، الأَسَدِيَّةُ، الزُّبَيْرِيَّةُ، الدِّمَشْقيَّةُ، وَتُعرَفُ بِبنتِ الحَبَقْبَقِ.

She was born in the year 546H.
وُلِدْت: سَنَةَ سِتٍّ وَأَرْبَعِيْنَ وَخَمْسِ مائَةٍ.

2021-05-31 21:48:02 One of the brothers from the people of Beirut said: “al-Awzāʿī's mother would enter his home and would look for where he would pray. And she would find it wet from his tears in the night.”

وَأَخْبَرَنِي بَعْضُ إِخْوَانِي مِنْ أَهْلِ بَيْرُوْتَ: أَنَّ أُمَّهُ كَانَتْ تَدْخُلُ مَنْزِلَ الأَوْزَاعِيِّ، وَتَتَفَّقَدُ مَوْضِعَ مُصَلاَّهُ، فَتَجِدُهُ رَطْباً مِنْ دُمُوْعِهِ فِي اللَّيْلِ.

2021-05-31 21:19:48 Jaʿfar b. al-Muġīrah reported that Saʿīd b. Jubayr said: “It would sometimes be that I would come to Ibn ʿAbbās and I wrote in my notebook until I filled it,
يَعْقُوْبُ القُمِّيُّ: عَنْ جَعْفَرِ بنِ أَبِي المُغِيْرَةِ، عَنْ سَعِيْدِ بنِ جُبَيْرٍ، قَالَ: رُبَّمَا أَتَيْتُ ابْنَ عَبَّاسٍ، فَكَتَبْتُ فِي صَحِيْفَتِي حَتَّى أَمْلأَهَا،

Then I wrote on the soles of my sandles until I filled it,
وَكَتَبْتُ فِي نَعْلِي حَتَّى أَمْلأَهَا،

And then I wrote on the palms of my hands.”
وَكَتَبْتُ فِي كَفِّي.

2021-05-31 18:12:27 Al-Sarī b. Yaḥyá said that a man who was sitting with al-Ḥasan (al-Baṣrī) was blessed with a child, so a man congratulated him saying: “Congratulations on the horse rider.”
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ صَالِحٍ، ثنا عَمْرُو بْنُ الرَّبِيعِ بْنِ طَارِقٍ، ثنا السَّرِيُّ بْنُ يَحْيَى، أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِمَّنْ كَانَ يُجَالِسُ الْحَسَنَ وُلِدَ لَهُ ابْنٌ فَهَنَّأَهُ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ: لِيَهْنِكَ الْفَارِسُ،

So he (ie: al-Ḥasan) asked: “And how do you know he would be a horse rider? He may be a carpenter, he may be a tailor.”
فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ: «وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ أَنَّهُ فَارِسٌ لَعَلَّهُ نَجَّارٌ، لَعَلَّهُ خَيَّاطٌ»

The man said: “What should I say then?”
قَالَ: فَكَيْفَ أَقُولُ؟

al-Ḥasan responded: Say: "May Allah make him Mubārak [a blessing] upon you and upon the ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ.”
قَالَ: «قُلْ جَعَلَهُ اللَّهُ مُبَارَكًا عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَى أُمَّةِ مُحَمَّدٍ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ»

2021-05-30 14:35:27 What do the sins of people have to do with the noble Messengers?
أَحَدُهَا: أَنْ يُقَالَ: مَاذَا عَلَى الرُّسُلِ الْكِرَامِ مِنْ مَعَاصِي أُمَمِهِمْ وَأَتْبَاعِهِمْ؟

Does this in any way defame their Prophethood in any way, or change anything in their message?
وَهَلْ يَقْدَحُ ذَلِكَ شَيْئًا فِي نُبُوَّتِهِمْ، أَوْ يُوجِبُ تَغَيُّرًا فِي وَجْهِ رِسَالَتِهِمْ؟!

Is any person from any of the different nationalities, other than the messengers –may peace be upon all of them, free of sin?
وَهَلْ سَلِمَ مِنَ الذُّنُوبِ عَلَى اخْتِلَافِ أَنْوَاعِهَا وَأَجْنَاسِهَا إِلَّا الرُّسُلُ وَالْأَنْبِيَاءُ عَلَيْهِمُ الصَّلَاةُ وَالسَّلَامُ؟

Is it in anyway permissible to reject their message because of the sins of some of their followers?
وَهَلْ يَجُوزُ رَدُّ رِسَالَتِهِمْ وَتَكْذِيبُهُمْ بِمَعْصِيَةِ بَعْضِ أَتْبَاعِهِمْ لَهُمْ؟

Is this is not but the most evil of ways?
وَهَلْ هَذَا إِلَّا مِنْ أَقْبَحِ التَّعَنُّتِ؟

It is like an ill person who is invited by a sincere doctor to take medicine that would cure him, but he says: “If you were a doctor there would not be any sick people.”
وَهُوَ بِمَنْزِلَةِ رَجُلٍ مَرِيضٍ دَعَاهُ طَبِيبٌ نَاصِحٌ إِلَى سَبَبٍ يَنَالُ بِهِ غَايَةَ عَافِيَتِهِ، فَقَالَ: لَوْ كُنْتُ طَبِيبًا لَمْ يَكُنْ فُلَانٌ وَفُلَانٌ مَرْضَى.

Is it binding upon the prophets to cure all sick people, to the point that there is not one sick person left on the face of the earth?
وَهَلْ يَلْزَمُ الرُّسُلَ أَنْ يَشْفُوا جَمِيعَ الْمَرْضَى بِحَيْثُ لَا يَبْقَى فِي الْعَالَمِ مَرِيضٌ؟

Has anyone ever been this stubborn towards any of the prophets?!
وَهَلْ تَعَنَّتَ أَحَدٌ عَلَى الرُّسُلِ بِمِثْلِ هَذَا التَّعَنُّتِ؟
