If you’ve taken a walk along our sandy shores, you may have come across the native Sea Lettuce (
Scaevola taccada).
Though their most visible feature is their large lettuce-like leaves, you’ll be pleasantly surprised when you peer closer and find their clusters of dainty, white-petalled flowers!

Happy Lunar New Year! All ‘dressed’ in red, keep an eye out for the Crimson Sunbird (
Aethopyga siparaja), a small yet energetic bird commonly found in our parks and gardens.
Though a common native species, it rarely stays in one spot for long — so consider yourself lucky if you catch a glimpse of this fiery red sunbird!

Calling all avid cyclists, hikers and long walk lovers! We opened Phase One of the Round Island Route (RIR) earlier this month!
This 75km recreational connection stretches from Rower’s Bay Park, through Sengkang Riverside Park, to Changi Bay and continues past the Singapore River to Berlayer Creek. When fully completed, the 150km RIR will be the longest recreational connection that loops around the island!
Along the route, check out key features such as otter holts and picturesque boardwalks and bridges that provide sweeping vistas of the sea.
If you are heading down, remember to wear a mask except when engaged in strenous exercises, observe safe distancing, and keep to group sizes of no more than 5 persons, with no intermixing between groups.

The ‘copper cheeks’ that make the Copper-cheeked Frog (
Hylarana labialis) identifiable are actually its eardrums!
You can also recognise this common native by its white upper lip and a call that sounds like dripping water!

The Common Putat (
Barringtonia racemosa) is a native mangrove species that can grow up to 20 metres tall! Its hanging flowers have long filamentous stamens, making it look like powder-puffs.
As its other name ‘Fish-Poison Tree’ suggests, its bark, fruits, seeds and roots contain saponins and were used to poison and catch fish in the past.
