One of the few marine spider species in the world, the Reef Spider (Desis martensi) can be found amongst the intertidal coral reefs, in places such as Labrador Nature Reserve and the Southern Islands.

At high tide, this spider survives underwater by sealing holes in corals or rocks with silk to create air pockets. It comes out during low tide to feed on isopods (sea cockroaches) and amphipods (sandhoppers).

Ever noticed how cats love boxes?

Cats get comfort and security from enclosed spaces, allowing them to observe without being seen. Cardboard boxes are great insulators, so cats tend to gravitate towards them for warmth!

The Black-naped Tern (Sterna sumatrana) is a resident seabird that can be found throughout Singapore’s waters.

These birds truly live life on the edge, as they lay a single egg on remote rocky outcrops with barely any nesting material!

As Singapore’s only regularly nesting seabird, the Black-naped Tern was also featured on our $1 “Bird Series” currency notes between 1976 and 1984.

Our native Sea Holly (Acanthus ebracteatus) occurs locally in Singapore’s mangrove forests. It has spiky toothed leaves that resemble those of the Common Holly (Ilex aquifolium)!

Apart from its striking foliage, the Sea Holly has white flowers that grow vertically in the form of a spike.
