It is world gratitude day today!

Did you know that gratitude can powerfully impact your mental health?

By moving our attention from problems to solutions, practicing gratitude has found to produce seratonin, dopamine, oxytocin which are feel-good neurotransmitters (Burton, 2020).

Gratitude has also been linked to improved self-esteem, moods, mental health and even physical health (Killen & Macaskill, 2015).

When we are able to become aware by acknowledging the support that we have right now, focus can be successfully shifted to our blessings rather than the burdens.

“Gratitude finds its root in the Latin word “gratis” which is where we get the word grace. It means finding good will in all things. In every situation, we have the choice to be grateful.”

These are the questions that I ask myself ever since I can remember. I believed I was insignificant and not contributing to this world in any way so I was but a waste of resources. When I was a teenager, I spent a lot of time on Tumblr and there was a quote that struck a chord with me.

Take a walk

Did you know that taking at least 30 minutes to walk per day can improve mental health? But if 30 mins sounds like too much, start small!

Often, it can be a struggle to be patient in our walks. However, it is important to take our time in our walks so that we can be present

Huddles over Struggles

It may be a struggle to be present because of the rush of (negative) thoughts that enter our minds. Don’t push them away, instead, acknowledge the struggles. Try to identify what it was that made you feel that way? Was it within your control? What perspective has not been considered?

There are also always positives, whether we notice it or not. Take courage and also acknowledge the positive things in your day!

What is Mental health?
Mental health includes our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It is an essential component of health. It is a state of well-being that determines how we handle stress, relate to people and how we make choices.

Mental health is fundamental to our individual and collective ability to think, interact, and enjoy life.

Some signs and symptoms include not enjoying activities you would usually enjoy, changes in appetite, feeling sad or crying often, being easily irritated for no reason and more.

How do I cope with my mental health struggles?
There are many things you can do to look after your mental health! Looking after your mental health allows you to adaptively cope with the challenges you face in your daily life.

There are times where it is so easy to give in.
Maybe it's hard or upsetting or you just don't understand.
Have a read of this poem and find your spot within it.
Don't Quit has been around for some time but if you haven't seen it well here is your chance to read it and see how you feel afterwards.
It is so easy to quit on our mental health because we don't feel it or it's just too much.
Have some time out, don't quit and try again.
You might just surprise yourself.

There seems to be so much riding on us that sometimes you do need to hold back.
Sometimes you don't need to say everything or you will be judged.
Sometimes it's your actions that speak the loudest.
Sometimes it's not necessary to know all the facts as the issue is either with you or with someone else.
Sometimes you don't need to involve everyone due to their age or the relationship you have with them.
Sometimes the answer is just not there at a particular point in time either.
Be gentle of yourself and make the right decision for you as you have to face what your dealing with and if you need help or support reach out.
Mental Health Issue is everyone's business and we need to take care.
