2022-02-25 09:12:16 Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said: “The rivers of al-Jannah spring from beneath hills, or mountains of musk.”
وعن أبي هريرة رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسولُ الله - صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ -: "أنْهارُ الجنَّة تخرُج مِنْ تحتِ تلالِ -أو مِنْ تحتِ جبالِ- المسْكِ".

Reported by Ibn Ḥibbān in his Ṣaḥīḥ.

2022-02-24 10:58:33 Aḥmad b. Wadīʿ reported that Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Aswad said: “My brothers are all better than me.”
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُحَمَّدِ بْنُ حَيَّانَ، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَبِي الْحَوَارِيِّ، سَمِعْتُ أَحْمَدَ بْنَ وَدِيعٍ، يَقُولُ: قَالَ أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ الْأَسْوَدُ: " إِخْوَانِي كُلُّهُمْ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي،

So, it was said to him: “And how is this, O Abū Muʿāwiyah?”
قِيلَ لَهُ: كَيْفَ ذَاكَ يَا أَبَا مُعَاوِيَةَ،

He replied: “They all see me as being better than them, and whoever sees me as being better than him, then, in reality, he is better than me.”
قَالَ: كُلُّهُمْ يَرَى الْفَضْلَ لِي عَلَى نَفْسِهِ وَمَنْ فَضَّلَنِي عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فَهُوَ خَيْرٌ مِنِّي "

2022-02-24 09:10:05 It was reported by Ibn Abī ʿl-Dunyā in his book “al-Tawakkul” from Muʿāwiyyah b. Qurrah:
وروى ابن أبي الدنيا في كتاب التوكل عن معاوية ابن قرَّة قال:

ʿUmar Ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) was in the presence of some people from Yemen (who did not want to work),
(( لقي عمر بن الخطاب ناساً من أهل اليمن

And he asked them: “Who are you?”
فقال: مَن أنتم؟

They said: “We are the mutawakkilūn (ie: those who put their trust in Allah).”
قالوا: نحن المتوكِّلون،

So ʿUmar said: “Rather, you are the muttakilūn (those who expect others to feed them)! And as for al-mutawakkil, he first throws the seeds into the earth (ie: as labour) and then depends on Allah the Mighty and Majestic (to provide for him).”
قال: بل أنتم المتَّكلون، إنَّ المتوكِّل الذي يلقي حبَّة في الأرض ويتوكَّل على الله عزَّ وجلَّ)).

2022-02-23 10:27:51 Muʿāḏ b. Jabal, (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said to him: “O Muʿāḏ; do you know what Allah's right upon the slaves is?”
أَنْبَأَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحِيمِ الْقَيْسَرَانِيُّ، ثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ ثَوْرٍ، ثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ الْفِرْيَابِيُّ، ثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، ح، وَسُفْيَانُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مَيْمُونٍ، عَنْ مُعَاذِ بْنِ جَبَلٍ، قَالَ: كُنْتُ رِدْفَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ لِي: «يَا مُعَاذُ أَتَدْرِي مَا حَقُّ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ؟»،

I said: “Allah and His Messenger are more knowledgeable.”
قَالَ: اللَّهُ وَرَسُولُهُ أَعْلَمُ،

He said: “That they worship Him, and do not associate any partners with him.”
قَالَ: «فَإِنَّ حَقَّ اللَّهِ عَلَى الْعِبَادِ أَنْ يَعْبُدُوهُ وَلَا يُشْرِكُوا بِهِ شَيْئًا»،

He asked: “Do you know what their right upon Him is? That He not punish them (ie: if they actualize such Tawḥīd and worship Him alone).”
قَالَ: «فَهَلْ تَدْرِي مَا حَقُّ الْعِبَادِ عَلَى اللَّهِ إِذَا فَعَلُوا ذَلِكَ؟ أَنْ لَا يُعَذِّبَهُمْ».

Reported by ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī, and others.

He used to live in al-Sharqiya in Baġdād.
كان ينزل الشرقية ببغداد،

In 297H I saw him teaching ḥadīth from Thābit al-Zāhid, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Nuʿmān and other early Shuyūkh people who had died long before he was born.
رأيته في سنة سبع وتسعين ومِئَتَيْن يحدث عن ثابت الزاهد، وَعَبد الصمد بن النعمان وغيرهما من قدماء الشيوخ قوما قد ماتوا قبل أن يولد بدهر.

The Shaykh (Ibn ʿAdī) said: I never saw a more shameless liar than he.
قال الشيخ: وما رأيت في الكذابين أقل حياء منه،

He used to stop at aṣḥāb al-kutub (ie: the book dealers) and carry away bundles (of books). Then he taught their contents, ascribing them to the man whose name was on the book - including those I mentioned, Thābit al-Zāhid, ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. al-Nuʿmān and their contemporaries - not paying any attention to when that man had died. Perhaps (the man) had died before (Ibn al-Ṣalt) was born. When I saw (Ibn al-Ṣalt) I estimated his age to be around seventy years.
وكان ينزل عند أصحاب الكتب يحمل من عندهم رزما فيحدث بما فيها، وباسم من كتب الكتاب باسمه، فيحدث عن الرجل الذي اسمه في الكتاب، ولاَ يبالي ذلك الرجل متى مات، ولعله قد مات قبل أن يولد، منهم من ذكرت ثابت الزاهد، وَعَبد الصمد بن النعمان ونظراؤهما، وكان تقديري في سِنِّهِ لمَّا رأيته سبعين سنة، أو نحوه،

I think that Thābit al-Zāhid died a little before or after 20H and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad at about the same time.
وأظن ثابت الزاهد قد مات قبل العشرين بيسير، أو بعده بيسير، وَعَبد الصمد قريب منه،

They had died long before (Ibn al-Ṣalt) was born.
وكانوا قد ماتوا قبل أن يولد بدهر.

2022-02-22 07:51:27 ʿAffān narrated to us (and said): Ḥammād b. Salamah narrated to us, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Khatmī, from his father, from his grandfather ʿUmayr b. Ḥabīb b. Khumāshah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: “The īmān increases and decreases.”
حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ، نا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي جَعْفَرٍ الْخَطْمِيِّ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ جَدِّهِ عُمَيْرِ بْنِ حَبِيبِ بْنِ خُمَاشَةَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: " الْإِيمَانُ يَزِيدُ وَيَنْقُصُ،

So it was said to him: “Then what is its increase, and what is its decrease?”
فَقِيلَ: فَمَا زِيَادَتُهُ؟ وَمَا نُقْصَانُهُ؟

He said: “When we mention our Lord and fear Him, then that is its increase. And when we are inattentive, we forget and we are neglectful, then that is its decrease.”
قَالَ: إِذَا ذَكَرْنَا رَبَّنَا وَخَشَيْنَاهُ فَذَلِكَ زِيَادَتُهُ، وَإِذَا غَفَلْنَا وَنَسِينَا وَضَيَّعْنَا فَذَلِكَ نُقْصَانُهُ "

بكر بن عبد الله المزني

Bakr b. ʿAbd Allah said: If you see someone older than you then respect him (or her), saying to yourself: “He (or she) has beaten me to Islām, Īmān and righteous actions, he (or she) is better than me.”
عن كنانة بن جبل قال: قال بكر بن عبد الله: إذا رأيت من هو أكبر منك فقل: هذا سبقني بالإيمان والعمل الصالح فهو خير مني،

And if you see someone younger than you (lower the wing of mercy to him) saying to yourself: “I have beaten him in sins, he is better than me.”
وإذا رأيت من هو أصغر منك فقل: سبقته إلى الذنوب والمعاصي فهو خير مني،

And if you see your brothers (or sisters) honouring and praising you then say: “That is from the grace of Allah upon me, but I do not deserve it.”
وإذا رأيت إخوانك يكرمونك ويعظمونك فقل: هذا فضل أخذوا به،

If you see that they belittle you then say: “This happened as a consequence of a previous sin.”
وإذا رأيت منهم تقصيراً فقل: هذا ذنب أحدثته.
